GAME RECAPMike Lansing homered twice in a franchise-record 13-run sixth inning as the Montreal Expos pounded their way to a 19-3 victory over the San Francisco Giants, who absorbed their worst beating since moving west 39 years ago.
The Expos had half of their 26 hits in the sixth off Joe Roa, Jim Poole and Julian Tavarez, shattering the club record. They fell just shy of team marks for runs and hits in a game. Henry Rodriguez hit a grand slam and Rondell White belted a solo shot for Montreal, which had 10 extra-base hits and 44 total bases.
"Everything seemed to be falling in -- line drives, ground balls, out of the park," White said. "We have an off day (Thursday). We'll see if we can keep this up."
Lansing became the fourth Expo to hit two homers in an inning and the first since Andre Dawson at Chicago on September 24th, 1985, in an explosion of 12 runs and 10 hits, both club records that were broken today.
Lansing had four hits, five RBI and three runs scored. White had four hits and scored three times. Doug Strange had three hits and drove in four runs. Rookie Vladimir Guerrero had three hits and three runs and Mark Grudzielanek had three hits.
The franchise record for runs is 21, set April 28th, 1996 at Colorado. The team record for hits is 28, set July 30th, 1978 at Atlanta.
It was the most runs allowed by the Giants since a 19-3 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers on May 26th, 1970. Since moving to San Francisco from New York in 1958, the Giants have never allowed more runs or lost by a larger margin.
"If the wheels come off, maybe it's better that they all come off at once," said Giants manager Dusty Baker, whose club has dropped seven of 10. "We just got killed."
The beneficiary of the outburst was Jeff Juden (3-0), who gave up three runs and seven hits in 5 1/3 innings and left with a 16-run lead. Juden fanned for the first out in the top of the inning, ending eight straight hits by Montreal batters.
"I didn't have my best stuff, but the boys just took over," Juden said. "That's the most runs anyone has ever given me."
The floodgates opened in the fifth. With runners at first and second and one out, second baseman Jeff Kent booted a potential double-play grounder by David Segui. Rodriguez homered for a 5-3 lead, Guerrero doubled and scored on a single by Strange that chased Osvaldo Fernandez (3-3).
"After the ball that should have been a double play, the next thing you know, we're looking up, and kept looking up," Baker said. "It was definitely one of those days."
"The ground ball Kent bobbled in the fifth opened the gate and seemed to take Fernandez out of the game," Expos manager Felipe Alou said. "After that, everything seemed to be extra bases."
In the sixth, Grudzielanek singled and scored on Lansing's third homer. White singled and Segui doubled, chasing Roa. Poole gave up consecutive RBI singles to F.P. Santangelo and Guerrero and a single by Strange loaded the bases. Chris Widger singled home two runs to make it 12-3 before Juden struck out.
"If I'm the only one not hitting, it's a good day," Juden said. "It's not often that you make the last out of one inning and the first out of the next."
Grudzielanek singled home another run, chasing Poole. Lansing greeted Tavarez with a three-run blast and a 16-3 lead.
"Man, I can't believe it," Lansing said. "I can't believe I just did that. It's one thing to get one home run. It's another two get two hits in an inning, let alone two home runs. I don't like to give myself compliments, but that's a pretty good trick."
White grounded out, but Segui singled, Santangelo doubled and Guerrero was hit by a pitch to fill the bases for Strange, who emptied them with a double. Widger ended it by grounding out.
Grudzielanek, Lansing, Segui, Santangelo and Strange all had two hits in the inning.
"Some of the hits, you go, 'Jeez, where will it stop,'" Lansing said. "Everybody wants to hit and be part of it, not the guy who gets the out."
The Giants scored twice in the first on a bases-loaded walk to Glenallen Hill and an RBI single by J.T. Snow. Rich Aurilia's sacrifice fly made it 3-0 in the second before White homered in the third.
