Game Story

EVANSTON, Illinois (Ticker) -- Vedran Vukusic and Michael Jenkins added plenty of fuel to the fire in Northwestern's feud with No. 24 Iowa. Vukusic scored a career-high 32 points, including 20 in the second half, and Jenkins hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer in overtime to give Northwestern its third straight victory over Iowa, 75-74, in a Big Ten Conference matchup. After being swept by Northwestern last season for the first time since 1959 - losses that may have cost Iowa a berth in the NCAA Tournament - the Hawkeyes hoped to gain revenge in this one. But the Wildcats kept things close in the first half, tying the game at 26-26 on T.J. Parker's 3-pointer with 2:06 to go and trailing by just three points at the break. A jumper by Pierre Pierce with 3:24 remaining in the second half gave Iowa (14-5, 2-4 Big Ten) a seemingly comfortable 62-50 cushion. But after Jenkins sank a 3-pointer, Vukusic took over for Northwestern, scoring the team's final 13 points to help forge a 66-66 tie. Pierce singlehandedly may have cost Iowa the win in regulation. Before missing a jumper at the buzzer, he committed a foul as Vukusic attempted a 3-pointer with 13.8 seconds to go, and the Croatian forward converted all three free throws to even the contest. Trailing, 74-72, Northwestern (9-9, 2-4) missed several opportunities to tie the game in the latter stages of overtime. But after Parker stole an inbounds pass by Iowa, Jenkins followed a timeout with a shot from the left corner that bounced twice off the rim before falling, giving the Wildcats a thrilling victory. Parker scored 12 points and Jenkins added nine for Northwestern, which snapped a four-game losing streak. Greg Brunner scored a career-high 28 points and Pierce chipped in 15 for the Hawkeyes, who fell to 102-50 in the all-time series. With his team ahead, 6-2, Brunner scored 12 straight Iowa points as the Hawkeyes took an 18-13 lead with 8:37 to go in the first half. Vukusic's 3-pointer with 4:10 remaining drew Northwestern within 24-23 and a shot from the arc by Parker two minutes later tied the game at 26-26. A 3-pointer by freshman Carlton Reed in the final seconds gave Iowa a 32-29 advantage at the break, but a three-point play by Davor Duvancic to open the second half evened the contest. Duvancic had a chance to tie the game at 74-74 with 25 seconds remaining, but his layup attempt was blocked by Brunner. At the other end, Jeff Horner missed a pair of free throws, keeping alive the Wildcats' hopes before a bad pass by Parker turned over the ball. Parker atoned for his miscue with the steal of the inbounds pass, setting up Jenkins' winning shot.
