GAME RECAP

Chris Jacke's 53-yard field goal, 3:41 into overtime, capped an 11-point second-half comeback and Don Beebe added a career-high 220 yards receiving as the Green Bay Packers edged the San Francisco 49ers, 23-20 in a key conference matchup.

Jacke sent the game into overtime by converting a 31-yard attempt with eight seconds left in regulation. Brett Favre drove Green Bay 69 yards in 94 seconds, culminating in the tying field goal.

Favre was pressed into the two-minute offense when Jeff Wilkins' 28-yard field goal, with 1:50 remaining in the fourth quarter, gave the Niners a 20-17 advantage. San Francisco cornerback Marquez Pope had picked off a Favre pass and returned it to the Green Bay 13, setting up what appeared to be the winning score.

But Favre drove the team in the final seconds of regulation, aided by a key defensive holding and unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on Niners defensive back Steve Israel.

Favre picked up where he left off on the Packers first possession of overtime. After a defensive stop of San Francisco, the Packers took over on their 43 and Favre completed a 13-yard strike to Beebe putting the ball at the San Francisco 40. Another completion to Derrick Mayes put the ball at the Niners 35 and three plays later Jacke split the upright easily with enough leg.

"I don't think I've ever had a winning kick or game-tying kick in Mike Holmgren's program," said Jacke. "I'm glad I could go out there and help this team win. It was a big game for us because it points us in the right direction for home-field advantage in the playoffs, even though it's early in the season. It makes believers out of a log of people that we are one of the elite teams in the league."

Beebe finished with 11 catches, including a 59-yard touchdown reception, while Favre completed 28-of-61 passes for 395 yards, the second highest total of his six-year career. The Packers lost starting wide receiver Robert Brooks for the year to a knee injury on their first play from scrimmage but Favre completed passes to eight different receivers during the contest.

"I had 10 catches before and four touchdowns in one game, but never 225 yards," said Beebe. "For me eleven catches is big. It was fun. There is a good part and a bad part of this. I really feel bad for Robert. He is a huge part of this team. Having him gone for the year really makes me sad. I wish he could be a part of this."

San Francisco quarterback Elvis Grbac started in place of Steve Young in a game-time decision and was 21-of-39 for 182 yards and a pair of scores but was intercepted twice.

The matchup of NFC Central and West Division leaders moves Green Bay 1 1/2 games ahead of the Niners, 2 1/2 ahead of the Dallas Cowboys and keeps them one game in front of the Minnesota Vikings in the division.

Green Bay (6-1) has won three straight and is 12-2 in its last 14 games. San Francisco (4-2) has dropped two straight to the Packers, including a 27-17 upset loss in the NFC Divisional Playoffs last season.

"We're not accustomed to losing, but we lost," said San Francisco head coach George Seifert. "Our team played a heckuva ball game. We played well, we played to win. Green Bay made the plays when it had to. Our team is pretty depressed. This was a difficult loss. We played good enough to win, but we didn't. We can't let this (the loss) sap our energy. We'll be heard from again."

The Packers opened a 6-0 advantage after one quarter on a pair of field goals by Jacke. Jacke capped a six-play, 50-yard drive with a 30-yard field goal and added a 25-yarder 2:25 later.

The 49ers cut the deficit to 6-3 midway through the second quarter when Grbac completed a 24-yard pass to Jerry Rice, setting up a 48-yard field goal by Wilkins.

Grbac's seven yard scoring pass to Rice gave San Francisco its first lead of the game with 2:20 remaining in the half. Tommy Vardell had a crucial 15-yard run during the drive and Grbac kept the possession alive by finding Rice for 13 yards on 3rd-and-2 to the Packers 22. Rice finished with seven receptions for 84 yards.

The Niners extended their advantage to 17-6 with 23 seconds left before the half when defensive end Dana Stubblefield picked off a pass and rumbled 15 yards to the Green Bay 28. Five plays later Grbac found Rice for a 13-yard score. The touchdown was the 150th receiving score of Rice's career.

The Packers drew within 17-14 midway through the third quarter when Favre completed the 59-yard scoring pass to Beebe. Replays showed Beebe may not have caught the ball but was definitely touched while on the ground, officials ruled otherwise and the touchdown stood.

"We got hammered on the officials' calls," said Grbac. "I would like to see some of those plays again. Our defense was playing so damn good until the God damn ref calls a 30-yard penalty on us."

Jacke then knotted the game with 3:35 to play in regulation when directed a 15-play, 50-yard drive. Favre found wideout Antonio Freeman for a pair of key receptions during the possession.

The Packers, who managed just 68 yards on the ground, lost starting running Edgar Bennett to a shoulder injury in the fourth quarter.
