GAME RECAPEd Belfour stopped 33 shots for his third career playoff shutout and Jeff Shantz scored a goal and set up another as the Chicago Blackhawks blanked the Calgary Flames, 3-0, to take a two games to none lead in their Western Conference quarterfinal series.
Belfour made 13 saves in the first period, 15 in the second and five in the third for the Blackhawks, who completed a home sweep of the first two games of the series, which moves to Calgary for Game Three on Sunday and Game Four on Tuesday.
"I felt real strong tonight, I felt in the groove and I was seeing the puck very well," Belfour said.
Calgary winger Theo Fleury had 10 shots on goal.
"He's one of their players that you have to keep an eye on," Belfour said. "He's got a great shot, you can't take him for granted at all. I just try to focus on the puck. The guys did a good job of keeping them to the outside. It always helps when I can see the puck, they've done a good job of taking away the screens."
Belfour's shutout was his first in the playoffs since a 2-0 blanking of the Vancouver Canucks on May 23rd, 1995 in the Western Conference semifinals. He also shut out the Detroit Red Wings, 1-0, on May 8th, 1992, in the division finals. Belfour recorded his 31st career playoff victory, tying him with Glenn Hall for second place on the Blackhawks' all-time list.
Chicago has outscored Calgary, 7-1, in the first two games.
Calgary coach Pierre Page wouldn't let any of his players speak to the press following the game. Apparently, Page is upset with Chicago owner Bill Wirtz and feels the referees are favoring the Blackhawks.
"All I am concerned about is what this league is going to do to Bill Wirtz," Page said. "I think you have to understand we have feelings to. The only thing that can happen now is what Wirtz has done. Somebody's got to do something."
The game remained scoreless until Chicago defenseman Gary Suter scored his first goal of the post-season with 1:51 left in the opening period. Shantz dug the puck out along the left boards and sent a pass into the slot. Suter picked up the loose puck, took several strides in and fired a slap shot through goaltender Rick Tabaracci's pads.
"I got my goal on the power play," Suter said. "I caught some guy swinging the wrong way and I was able to find the hole. Calgary came out a lot harder tonight like we expected. Eddie Belfour came up big for us tonight. I thought we took a few undisciplined penalties, that's going to happen. We have to stick to our game plan."
Chicago extended its lead to 2-0 on Jeremy Roenick's goal with 6:10 left in the second period. Denis Savard skated low into the right circle before sliding a pass to Roenick in the high slot. Roenick's initial shot went wide but he followed the rebound off the endboards and scored from low in the right circle before Tabaracci could get back into position.
"It felt great since it's been about a month since I've scored," Roenick said. "It was a big goal for me and it's a great feeling. It was our second goal and it put us up 2-0. It gave us a big boost but as it turned out we only needed one tonight. We're not changing our attitude, we have to take it day by day. Just because we won two games doesn't mean anything. It's important we go into into their building and play the same way."
Shantz tallied his first goal of the series with three minutes to play in the second. He took a pass from Bob Probert at the right side of the crease, skated in front and slid a backhander past Tabaracci.
Tabaracci finished with 29 saves for the Flames, who have lost five straight post-season series since winning the Stanley Cup in 1989. Trevor Kidd started Game One in goal for Calgary.
