Results for Qualifying Round 1
ENNIS, Texas - DALLAS - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Pro
Stock at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 17th annual O'Reilly Fall
Nationals presented by Castrol Syntec listing lane, driver name, elapsed
time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Left Lane: Mark Carter Runs 9.908/92.10, Now #2
Right Lane: Steve Schmidt Runs 6.930/196.93, Now #1
3:09 PM It's 74 degrees, 52 percent relative humidity, the barometer 30.10 and falling, under sunny skies, the track temperature now 98 degrees.

Schmidt is driving the car usually driven by Mark Osborne, with Hoosier tires. False start, the computer system not in the right mode to start the cars. So they backed the cars out, reset the computer, and tried again. The second try worked, but Carter shook and skated around before lifting. Full pass for Schmidt.
Left Lane: Mike Trumble Jr Runs 6.955/199.73, Now #2
Right Lane: Scott Geoffrion Runs 6.976/198.76, Now #3
This is the first race where Geoffrion's Ford is running the new Panella powerplant. Both cars went right down the groove.
Left Lane: Mike Corvo Jr Runs 9.869/93.43, Now #4
Right Lane: Brad Jeter Runs 6.904/200.44, Now #1
Corvo launched, shook, and lifted. Jeter went right down the groove and to the top of the heap - for now, anyway.
Left Lane: Don Smith Runs 9.449/99.06, Now #5
Right Lane: Arturo Delgado Runs 6.926/199.42, Now #2
Smith shook and skated around, then lifted. Clean pass for Delgado.
Left Lane: John Geyer No Time, Now #8
Right Lane: Ben Watson Runs 6.954/199.20, Now #3
Geyer broke in the water. Watson went right down the groove.
Left Lane: John Nobile Runs 6.996/198.76, Now #7
Right Lane: Robert Patrick Runs 6.933/199.55, Now #3
Both cars were a bit sow off the line, with 1.05 60-foot times.
Left Lane: Kenny Koretsky Runs 6.958/198.10, Now #7
Right Lane: Greg Stanfield Runs 6.936/200.40, Now #4
Stanfield give us our second 200 mph speed of the weekend.
Left Lane: Larry Nance Runs 6.911/200.98, Now #3
Right Lane: Tom Lee Runs 6.908/200.57, Now #2
Two nice runs, two more 200 mph speeds, but Jeter stays #1.
Left Lane: Larry Morgan Runs 7.060/197.80, Now #13
Right Lane: Mark Pawuk Runs 6.933/199.46, Now #6
Morgan's car was moving around a lot in the middle of the run.
Left Lane: Tom Martino Runs 6.937/199.77, Now #8
Right Lane: JR Carr Runs 6.955/199.02, Now #11
Two more clean runs, no visible problems.
Left Lane: Troy Coughlin Runs 12.369/98.84, Now #21
Right Lane: Tom Hammonds Runs 6.894/200.35, Now #1
Coughlin shook and slowed early. Nice pass for Hammonds.
Left Lane: Gene Wilson Runs 6.906/200.71, Now #4
Right Lane: V. Gaines Runs 6.900/200.26, Now #2
Two good runs, Gaines hoping to make it three wins in a row here.
Left Lane: Bruce Allen Runs 6.881/200.93, Now #1
Right Lane: George Marnell Runs 6.939/199.46, Now #14

Right Lane: Mark Whisnant Runs 6.899/200.08, Now #3

Right Lane: Mike Edwards Runs 6.904/200.26, Now #6
The 60-foot times have not been very low this round, Bruce Allen's 1.022 the best so far, with most competitive runs clocked in the 1.03-1.04 range.
Left Lane: Kurt Johnson Runs 6.876/202.47, Now #2
Right Lane: Ron Krisher Runs 6.859/201.92, Now #1
Mid-1.03 60-foot times lead to the two lowest elapsed times so far, KJ with a huge speed.
Left Lane: Warren Johnson Runs 6.884/201.79, Now #5
Right Lane: Greg Anderson Runs 6.881/201.20, Now #3
There are signs inside Anderson's car with arrows, saying "This side up." He kept the shiny side up here on a good pass, just a couple ticks quicker than WJ.
Left Lane: Jim Yates Runs 6.902/200.49, Now #10
Right Lane: Jeg Coughlin Runs 6.873/200.71, Now #2

Gaines is through for the weekend. Troy is also running Su[per gas - now he can concentrate on that, their first round of eliminations delayed until this evening by mist this morning.
Left Lane: Greg Stanfield Runs 6.925/199.77, Now #18

Best prior run: 6.893/199.95, Was #17
Marnell's car went to the left, toward the wall, and danced around until he lifted. Carter was the last driver with a chance of bumping Schmidt, so the field is set, though a couple good runs could shuffle the pairings.
Left Lane: Mike Edwards Runs 6.925/199.51, Now #14

Best prior run: 6.865/200.13, Was #6
Yates makes the third-quickest run of the session.
Left Lane: Jeg Coughlin Runs 6.896/200.71, Now #2
Best prior run: 6.854/201.47, Was #2

The two quickest runs of the session, side-by-side.
Left Lane: Ron Krisher Runs 6.891/200.66, Now #1
Best prior run: 6.850/201.88, Was #1
Right Lane: Warren Johnson Runs 6.903/200.17, Now #3
Best prior run: 6.855/201.79, Was #3
Krisher ends up with the quickest lap of the round, Jeg second, KJ third, WJ and Hammonds tied for fourth, WJ with the better speed. Not only did nothing change this round, no driver improved over his previous best and only Krisher managed to tie the bump time.

Results for Elimination Round 1
ENNIS, Texas - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 1
eliminations in Pro Stock at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 17th
annual O'Reilly Fall Nationals presented by Castrol Syntec:
 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Gene Wilson (Mopar Parts Neon R/T) 0.449 6.840 202.06
 (L) Tom Lee (J&J Racing Neon R/T) 0.409 8.999 105.69
It's 61 degrees, 60 percent relative humidity, the barometer 30.40 and steady, the track temperature 78 degrees, under a light overcast. The density altitude is near sea level, about 3,000 feet better than yesterday, so the Pro Stockers should be flying today and upsets could be plentiful.

Two Dodges in the field and they meet in round one. If you believe the rumors, Wilson could replace Lee in the Allen Johnson Dodge next year, so this matchup was an interesting one and the first time they have raced each other in NHRA Pro Stock. They have met in several IHRA "Mountain Motor" finals, just about evenly split.

Lee nailed Wilson to the tree, but something broke and Wilson went by for a surprisingly easy win and his best elapsed time for the weekend.
 (W) Greg Anderson (Vegas General Constr Cavalier0.451 6.828 202.97
 (L) Bruce Allen (Reher-Morrison Grand Am) 0.430 7.069 163.54
Allen was 2-1 against Anderson in prior races this year and Allen had this one in the bag until half track, then his car just quit running. Anderson's margins (negative means he's behind): G And Margin 60ft(-0.038), 330 ft(-0.044), 660ft(-0.041), 1,000ft(0.015). MOV: 0.2208 seconds (approximately 53 feet).
 (W) Kurt Johnson (AC Delco Cavalier) 0.440 6.792 203.94
 (L) Larry Nance (U.S. Marines Cavalier) 0.445 7.360 147.92
For the third time in a row, the car in the right lane slowed markedly past half track. Strange things going on??? Look at KJ's speed, a career-best for Johnson and a track record.
 (W) Jim Yates (Splitfire/Peak Grand Am) 0.462 6.810 201.74
 (L) Tom Hammonds (Winnebago/Itasca Cavalier) 0.454 21.259 34.76
Yates beat Hammonds in their only prior meeting this year. Yates has been struggling to find speed this weekend, changing just about everything that can be changed, including the engine and drive train. He's consistently been among the quickest for the first half of the race track in every session, but the car has been "laying down" on the top end. This time the right lane car broke early in the run. Yates wins, but he's still looking for speed.
 (W) Brad Jeter (Caravelle Beach Club Cavalier) 0.452 7.631 133.29
 (L) Tom Martino (Martino Racing Grand Am) 0.325(R) 6.844 201.52
Not much to say here...jeter slowed, but the win light was already on in his lane. He loses lane choice to Kurt Johnson in round two.
 (W) Mike Edwards (Young Life Cavalier) 0.425 6.826 201.25
 (L) Warren Johnson (GM Performance Parts Grand A0.483 6.795 203.43
These two were 1-1 in prior races this year, WJ winning in Columbus and Edwards in Denver, enroute to Edwards' second win of the year. Edwards cut the tree down and WJ could not catch him, Edwards overcoming the right-lane jinx for a huge holeshot win. WJ was closing fast, but ran out of race track, Edwards winning by a car length. Edwards faces Yates next round, Yates with lane choice.
 (W) Jeg Coughlin (Jeg's Mail Order Cavalier) 0.421 6.817 202.06
 (L) George Marnell (Marnell M'Sports Grand Am) 0.445 6.860 201.20
Jeg defeated Marnell once before during this season, in the first round at Topeka. This one was all Coughlin, away first then holding a car length lead all the way down the track. He races Anderson next round and will have lane choice.
 (W) Steve Schmidt (Steve Schmidt Racing Grand Am0.871 6.826 202.02
 (L) Ron Krisher (Eagle One Cavalier) 0.000(R) (Broke)
Krisher's car had a leak when they fired it for the burnout and the crew pulled the nose off, fixed the leak, then put it back on. meanwhile, Schmidt had done his burnout and was back behind the line, waiting for Krisher. Starter Rick Stewart signaled Krisher to make a short burnout and stage immediately. Krisher made a normal burnout, across the line, and as soon as he backed up, the starter sent Schmidt without giving Krisher a chance to stage. Schmidt faces Wilson next round and will have lane choice.

Results for Elimination Round 2
ENNIS, Texas - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 2
eliminations in Pro Stock at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 17th
annual O'Reilly Fall Nationals presented by Castrol Syntec:
 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Gene Wilson (Mopar Parts Neon R/T) 0.416 6.833 202.11
 (L) Steve Schmidt (Steve Schmidt Racing Grand Am0.435 6.844 201.29
t's 62 degrees, 60 percent relative humidity, the barometer 30.38 and falling, the track temperature 77 degrees, under a light overcast.

Wilson took the lead at the green and steadily extended it. His incremental margins: 60ft(0.008), 330ft(0.014), 660ft(0.018), 1,000ft(0.025). MOV: 0.0305 seconds (approximately 9 feet).
 (W) Jeg Coughlin (Jeg's Mail Order Cavalier) 0.422 6.813 202.47
 (L) Greg Anderson (Vegas General Constr Cavalier0.412 6.826 202.38
Jeg was 4-2 against Anderson this season before this race, but Anderson almost stole this one at the tree. Almost. It was a classic drag race, Jeg leading by a few thousandths at every incremental marker. Jeg's margins: 60ft(0.004), 330 ft(0.007), 660ft(0.006), 1,000ft(0.005). MOV: 0.0038 seconds (approximately 14 inches)..
 (W) Jim Yates (Splitfire/Peak Grand Am) 0.420 6.813 202.02
 (L) Mike Edwards (Young Life Cavalier) 0.449 6.839 201.61
Edwards and Yates were 2-2 this season, but led this one all the way, slowly extending his lead to win by about 16 feet. Yates matched Jeg's elapsed time, but loses lane choice in the semifinals because Coughlin had a better speed.
 (W) Kurt Johnson (AC Delco Cavalier) 0.457 6.785 204.03
 (L) Brad Jeter (Caravelle Beach Club Cavalier) 0.431 13.204 63.51
Jeter launched and slowed almost immediately. KJ stormed down the track with low ET of the round and another track speed record. He will have lane choice against Wilson next round.

Results for Elimination Round 3
ENNIS, Texas - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 3
eliminations in Pro Stock at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 17th
annual O'Reilly Fall Nationals presented by Castrol Syntec:
 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Jeg Coughlin (Jeg's Mail Order Cavalier) 0.416 6.863 202.15
 (L) Jim Yates (Splitfire/Peak Grand Am) 0.324(R) 6.848 201.97
3:22 PM It's 63 degrees, 60 percent relative humidity, the barometer 30.38 and falling, the track temperature 81 degrees, under overcast skies. In other words, almost perfect conditions for Pro Stock except for the humidity.

This was a huge matchup for the 2002 championship, Jeg leading Yates by 68 points and having a virtual lock if he won here. Jeg staged first and Yates flinched, so Jeg is now 5-0 against Yates this year and well on his way to the POWERade championship.
 (W) Gene Wilson (Mopar Parts Neon R/T) 0.419 6.840 202.06
 (L) Kurt Johnson (AC Delco Cavalier) 0.438 6.822 203.11
On a holeshot, Wilson goes to his second final round of the year. KJ had a better 60-foot time, but Wilson took a small lead by 330 feet and then held on to win a close one. His incremental margins: 60ft(-0.003), 330ft(0.004), 660ft(0.006), 1,000ft(0.004). MOV: 0.0017 seconds (approximately 6 inches). Wilson will have lane choice against Coughlin in the final round.

 (L) Gene Wilson (Mopar Parts Neon R/T) 0.383(R) 6.833 202.33
4:37 PM Jeg wanted this win to extend his lead over Jim Yates to 108 points. Wilson wanted it to get his first NHRA win. Wilson wanted it a little too badly and went red, allowing Jeg to cruise to victory and a virtual lock on the 2002 championship.
