Results for Qualifying Round 1
ENNIS, Texas - DALLAS - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Top
Alcohol Dragster at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 17th annual
O'Reilly Fall Nationals presented by Castrol Syntec listing lane, driver
name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Left Lane: David Wells Runs 5.574/256.99, Now #1
Right Lane: Mike Bowers No Time, Now #2
12:40 PM It's 64 degrees, 70 percent relative humidity, the barometer 30.15 and steady, under overcast skies. The "clearing" promised in the weather forecasts for the past two days finally appears to be headed this way, with patches of blue sky west of the Motorplex. The track temperature is 85 degrees.

Bowers left before the tree was activated, shook hard, then shut it down. Wells was a little soft at the start, with a 1.009 60-foot time, then picked the pace up nicely.
      Left Lane: Erica Walsh-Credeur
                                  Runs 5.654/245.49, Now #3
Right Lane: James Copeland IIRuns 5.608/256.84, Now #2
Two fairly good runs, neither car shaking severely.
Left Lane: Larry Traugott Runs 5.618/252.88, Now #3
Right Lane: Rick Santos Runs 10.576/71.67, Now #5
Santos' return got off to a bad start, Santos shaking and slowing early in the run. Traugott made a good pass, right down the groove.
Left Lane: Arthur Gallant Runs 5.335/260.56, Now #1
Right Lane: Mitch Myers Runs 5.510/252.88, Now #2
These two came a long way to get here, Gallant from Massachusetts and Myers from Oregon. With the 2002 title securely in his pocket, Gallant is here to take a shot at the fabled Motorplex cement racing surface. His first shot was a good one, no dropped cylinders, the car straight and smooth. Nice run by Myers, too, but not in the same league as Gallant's.
Left Lane: Brandon Johnson Runs 8.652/94.27, Now #8
Right Lane: Lee Callaway Runs 5.521/257.51, Now #3
The "clearing" is now overhead at the Motorplex - it's only two days late getting here. New Division Four champ Callaway made a nice opening pass, hard and straight. Johnson smoked the tires and shut it down.
Left Lane: Shelly Howard Runs 5.458/260.49, Now #2
Right Lane: Gary Ormsby Jr Runs 7.939/100.27, Now #9
The quickest car in the country on what should be the quickest track, under almost ideal conditions...Ormsby shook and then smoked the tires, blazing them for a couple hundred feet before he lifted. Meanwhile, Howard's blown car made a very pretty run down the left lane, smooth and straight with no visible shake.
Left Lane: Mark Niver Runs 5.512/244.69, Now #4
Right Lane: Ed Schmeeckle Runs 5.684/251.04, Now #10
Schmeeckle, fresh off his win at Noble last weekend, could not keep up with Niver's smooth pass after driving through some shake early in the run.
Left Lane: Bill Reichert Runs 7.493/125.01, Now #11
Right Lane: Chris Ricketts Runs 8.286/89.23, Now #13
Both cars left hard, Reichert with a 0.950 and Ricketts a 0.938, then both shook and smoked the tires.
Left Lane: Gene Snow Runs 5.550/246.84, Now #6
Right Lane: Bruce Bowler Runs 5.662/254.66, Now #11
Gene Snow had a great weekend at Noble - until the second round of eliminations, anyway. He posted several A/Fuel career-best runs at that event. He made another good run here, the headers clean. Bowler dropped a cylinder early in the run and never picked it back up.
Left Lane: Jeff Hamelink Runs 11.902/79.65, Now #19
Right Lane: James Gascoyne Runs 5.671/241.28, Now #12
Hamelink shook hard and lifted. Gascoyne shook, pedaled, then continued.
Left Lane: Larry Becktold Runs 6.449/227.15, Now #15
Right Lane: Todd Datweiler Runs 5.456/254.81, Now #2
Becktold's car was slow off the line, with a 1.130 60-foot time, and never did pick the pace up. Good run for Datweiler, no dropped cylinders, right down the groove.
Left Lane: Jason Cannon Runs 5.485/258.02, Now #4
Right Lane: David Christy No Time, Now #23
Christy left way before the tree was activated - while Cannon was still stagig, so startr Rick Stewart held Cannon up until Christy cleared the top end. Then Cannon made a very good run, continuing the good performance he showed last weekend, at darlington.
Left Lane: Tony Bartone Runs 5.627/257.65, Now #13
Right Lane: Alan Bradshaw Runs 5.581/254.09, Now #10
Bartone debuted his brand-new car here, the car still unpainted. The new car stumbled a bit, but went right down the groove. Good run by Bradshaw, also right down the groove.
Left Lane: Troy Buff Runs 5.681/234.13, Now #17
Right Lane: James Thompson Runs 5.709/251.04, Now #19
Last pair. Both cars were slow off the mark, then looked good to half track. That's where Buff's engine started going away, leaving a trail of smoke and oil behind it. Thompson also struggled on the top end, but showed no signs of mechanical problems.

ENNIS, Texas - DALLAS - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Top
Alcohol Dragster at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 17th annual
O'Reilly Fall Nationals presented by Castrol Syntec listing lane, driver
name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following
run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Bruce Bowler Runs 5.486/260.34, Now #6
Best prior run: 5.662/254.66, Was #15
Right Lane: Mark Niver Runs 5.479/257.65, Now #4
Best prior run: 5.512/244.69, Was #6
5:38 PM It's 73 degrees, 56 percent relative humidity, the barometer 30.05 and falling, under sunny skies. The track temperature is 99 degrees.

The second session opens with a pair of A/Fuel cars. Both went cleanly down the groove with all eight lit all the way through.
Left Lane: Rick Santos Runs 5.353/264.08, Now #2
Best prior run: 10.576/71.67, Was #25
Right Lane: Larry Becktold Runs 6.744/203.20, Now #21
Best prior run: 6.449/227.15, Was #20
That's more like it! A pretty run by Santos, the incremental times: 60ft-0.926 sec., 330ft-2.360, 660ft-3.506/214.84mph, 1,000ft-4.503
Becktold struggled to get off the line, with a 1.349 60-foot time, and the car was sluggish to half track. After the run, the Safety Safari did some grooming in his lane, so he may have been lightly oiling his tires.
Left Lane: Lee Callaway Runs 5.616/255.53, Now #10
Best prior run: 5.521/257.51, Was #9
Right Lane: Bill Reichert Runs 5.394/265.72, Now #3
Best prior run: 7.493/125.01, Was #22
Nice run by Reichert after struggling in the first session. No help for Callaway, Reichert pushing him one rung down the ladder.
Left Lane: Gary Ormsby Jr Runs 5.319/256.55, Now #1
Best prior run: 7.939/100.27, Was #23
     Right Lane: Erica Walsh-Credeur
                                  Runs 5.721/243.96, Now #18
Best prior run: 5.654/245.49, Was #17
Ormsby's car was spewing raw fuel from header on both sides of the engine for the last half of the run and he still took over the #1 spot! No help for Credeur.
Left Lane: Todd Datweiler Runs 5.448/250.62, Now #5
Best prior run: 5.456/254.81, Was #5
Right Lane: Tony Bartone Runs 5.962/251.88, Now #17
Best prior run: 5.627/257.65, Was #17
Two good runs for Datweiler, right down the groove. Once again Bartone's new dragster struggled, with a sub-par 1.064 60-foot time, only running 201 mph at half track.
Left Lane: David Christy Runs 15.165/56.81, Now #27
                                  No Prior Run
Right Lane: Shelly Howard Runs 5.446/260.04, Now #5
Best prior run: 5.458/260.49, Was #6
Christy's car launched with the wheels up and then nosed over, the engine silent. Nice run by Howard, but her engine left a spray of something behind her on the top end. No oil, so we continue.
Left Lane: Alan Bradshaw Runs 5.557/256.26, Now #14
Best prior run: 5.581/254.09, Was #14
Right Lane: David Wells Runs 5.513/256.99, Now #11
Best prior run: 5.574/256.99, Was #13
With evening approaching, the track temperature is steadily dropping - now it's down to 91 degrees. Two nice runs here, Wells leapfrogging over Bradshaw in the order.
Left Lane: Mitch Myers Runs 5.848/240.96, Now #10
Best prior run: 5.510/252.88, Was #10
Right Lane: Jeff Hamelink Runs 10.778/87.92, Now #26
Best prior run: 11.902/79.65, Was #26
Hamelink shook and then smoked the tires. Myers dropped a couple cylinders early in the run.
Left Lane: James Copeland IIRuns 5.561/255.68, Now #15
Best prior run: 5.608/256.84, Was #15
Right Lane: Arthur Gallant Runs 5.345/268.01, Now #2
Best prior run: 5.335/260.56, Was #2
Copeland stepped up a few hundredths, stayed fifteenth. Gallant made a very nice run, losing a hundredth from his first pass, but setting top speed of the event so far.
Left Lane: Ed Schmeeckle Runs 5.663/252.03, Now #19
Best prior run: 5.684/251.04, Was #21
Right Lane: Gene Snow Runs 5.523/257.65, Now #13
Best prior run: 5.550/246.84, Was #13
Looks like "Snowman" is getting the hang of this drag racing stuff...
Left Lane: Chris Ricketts Runs 15.264/65.35, Now #25
Best prior run: 8.286/89.23, Was #24
Right Lane: Brandon Johnson Runs 5.563/256.41, Now #16
Best prior run: 8.652/94.27, Was #25
Ricketts picked the front wheels up and started smoking the tires immediately. No problems for Johnson, who replaced Larry Traugott on the bubble.
Left Lane: James Thompson Runs 5.568/254.95, Now #17
Best prior run: 5.709/251.04, Was #23
Three left-side singles will complete the session. Thompson is running a new car, billed as a "2003 Monden." He made a nice run, missing the bump time by 0.005 seconds despite some early tire shake.
Left Lane: Mike Bowers Runs 5.910/210.42, Now #24
                                  No Prior Run
Bowers made it to the other end under power...
Left Lane: James Gascoyne Runs 8.861/97.85, Now #22
Best prior run: 5.671/241.28, Was #22
Gascoyne launched, the tires started to spin, the engine unloaded and dropped several cylinders, and he started coasting.

Best prior run: 5.394/265.72, Was #4
2:05 PM It's 77 degrees, 61 percent relative humidity, the barometer 30.11 and falling, with a track temperature of 98 degrees, under mostly cloudy skies.

The bump spot for this final session belongs to Brandon Johnson at 5.563 seconds. Datweiler was up in smoke immediately. Good lap by Reichert, right down the groove.
Left Lane: Lee Callaway Runs 5.564/256.11, Now #12
Best prior run: 5.521/257.51, Was #12
Right Lane: Tony Bartone Runs 5.745/252.45, Now #19
Best prior run: 5.627/257.65, Was #19
Bartone's new car didn't perform well in his first two shots. Make that three, the car struggling down the track. Nice run by Callaway, smooth and relatively shake-free.
Left Lane: Chris Ricketts Runs 5.446/261.62, Now #5
Best prior run: 8.286/89.23, Was #26
Right Lane: Larry Traugott Runs 5.543/256.84, Now #15
Best prior run: 5.618/252.88, Was #18
Two nice runs, bumping Johnson and James Copeland II.
Left Lane: James Thompson Runs 5.887/201.56, Now #19
Best prior run: 5.568/254.95, Was #19
Right Lane: Mark Niver Runs 17.541/68.38, Now #8
Best prior run: 5.479/257.65, Was #8
Thompson was shooting at Alan Bradshaw's 5.557. He was well on his way to doing just that until what sounded like a burst panel letting go and the engine going silent. Niver smoked the tires on the launch and shut it down.
Left Lane: Rick Santos Runs 5.418/261.70, Now #3
Best prior run: 5.353/264.08, Was #3
     Right Lane: Erica Walsh-Credeur
                                  Runs 5.837/206.18, Now #21
Best prior run: 5.654/245.49, Was #21
Santos drove through a bit of shake on the launch on this pass, still a good one. Credeur's car was off the pace and then she was going too fast when she tried to make the turnoff and hit the wall. She is okay, but it will take a few minutes to get her car off the track.
Left Lane: James Copeland IIRuns 5.588/256.26, Now #17
Best prior run: 5.561/255.68, Was #17
Right Lane: Shelly Howard Runs 5.456/259.74, Now #6
Best prior run: 5.446/260.04, Was #6
Howard is very consistent this weekend, making her third nice run of the event. Copeland came close, oh-so-close, but will have to settle for first alternate (or worse).
Left Lane: James Gascoyne Runs 6.389/203.85, Now #23
Best prior run: 5.671/241.28, Was #23
Right Lane: Gene Snow Runs 5.943/180.50, Now #14
Best prior run: 5.523/257.65, Was #14
gascoyne spun the tires, pedaled, then it appeared he pushed out a head gasket, with several flashes of flame from the left rear of the engine. Snow dropped a couple cylinders early in the run.
Left Lane: Ed Schmeeckle Runs 5.693/241.22, Now #22
Best prior run: 5.663/252.03, Was #22
Right Lane: Brandon Johnson Runs 5.462/257.51, Now #8
Best prior run: 5.563/256.41, Was #18
Johnson made a very nice pass to get in, bumping Bradshaw. That put Traugott on the bubble at 5.543.
Left Lane: Mitch Myers Runs 5.872/231.24, Now #12
Best prior run: 5.510/252.88, Was #12
Right Lane: David Wells Runs 9.509/85.14, Now #13
Best prior run: 5.513/256.99, Was #13
Myers dropped a couple cylinders immediately and labored down the track. Wells shook early in the run and lifted.
Left Lane: Bruce Bowler Runs 5.494/250.62, Now #11
Best prior run: 5.486/260.34, Was #11
Right Lane: Jeff Hamelink Runs 9.771/86.00, Now #27
Best prior run: 10.778/87.92, Was #27
Hamelink smoked the tires and lifted. Nice run by Bowler, almost matching his best of the weekend.
Left Lane: Alan Bradshaw Runs 5.549/254.59, Now #17
Best prior run: 5.557/256.26, Was #17
Right Lane: Larry Becktold No Time, Now #26
Best prior run: 6.449/227.15, Was #26
Becktold couldn't get the engine fired and was pushed away. Bradshaw made a good run, picked up a few thousandths, and still came up 0.006 seconds short of the bump time.
Left Lane: David Christy No Time, Now #28
Best prior run: 15.165/56.81, Was #28
Right Lane: Jason Cannon Runs 5.506/257.58, Now #10
Best prior run: 5.485/258.02, Was #10
Christy's car stopped at the end of his burnout and he climbed out of the car. Cannon made another good run, slightly slower than his first.
Left Lane: Gary Ormsby Jr Runs 5.388/226.13, Now #1
Best prior run: 5.319/256.55, Was #1
Ormsby's car was lazy off the line and was well off his usual pace, the engine going silent well before the finish line.
Left Lane: Mike Bowers Runs 6.019/232.49, Now #25
Best prior run: 5.910/210.42, Was #25
Last car of the session. Bowers' car was very sluggish off the line, with a 1.101 60-foot time.

Results for Elimination Round 1
ENNIS, Texas - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 1
eliminations in Top Alcohol Dragster at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing
Series, 17th annual O'Reilly Fall Nationals presented by Castrol Syntec:
 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Jason Cannon (capsmarine.com B/AD) 0.462 5.515 256.84
 (L) Todd Datweiler (T&E Enterprises A/FD) 0.523 13.294 88.43
5:48 PM It's 77 degrees, 62 percent relative humidity, the barometer 30.10 and rising, with a track temperature of 95 degrees under clear skies and a setting Sun.

Datweiler was up in smoke almost immediately. Cannon was on time and right down the groove for an unopposed win.
 (W) Rick Santos (Jack O'Bannon B/AD) 0.494 5.402 260.71
 (L) Lee Callaway (South Texas Dental B/AD) 0.479 5.557 256.41
This is a classy matchup, the reigning national champion against the 2002 Division Four champion. Callaway has been consistent through qualifying, Santos a bit inconsistent after a season-long layoff. It looks like the downtime didn't hurt Santos much, Callaway didn't get much of an edge off the line and Santos made a solid, strong win for the victory.
 (W) Arthur Gallant (Pep Boys Racing A/FD) 0.606 5.472 253.66
 (L) Gene Snow (A/FD) 0.486 6.382 158.39
Gallant was vulnerable, late and slower than usual, running his slowest pass of the weekend, but Snow's car dropped cylinders and he shut it off before the 1,000-foot marker. He will have lane choice against Cannon in the second round.
 (W) Gary Ormsby Jr (Race Day Cigars A/FD) 0.549 5.366 246.37
 (L) Larry Traugott (Traugott Racing B/AD) 0.442 5.666 249.86
The throttle on Ormsby's car hung at the end of the burnout and he couldn't get the RPMs down to shift, but a team member ran down and knocked the throttle down. Traugott made a race of it, leading almost to half track, but then Ormsby's big top end charge took over and he won by a couple car lengths.
 (W) David Wells (Blue Bunny B/AD) 0.504 5.539 254.23
 (L) Bill Reichert (Bars Leaks A/FD) 0.478 5.685 254.38
Good drag race, but Reichert lost a tenth to Wells in the first 300 feet and was unable to cut into that margin from there on.
 (W) Bruce Bowler (Phoenix Apparel A/FD) 0.502 5.678 227.15
 (L) Shelly Howard (Howard Racing B/AD) 0.776 5.503 254.09
Howard was very late and Bowler pulled off the holeshot victory despite problems on the top end of his run that slowed his speed dramatically. MOV: 0.0995 seconds (approximately 37 feet). He faces Santos next round and will not have lane choice.
 (W) Brandon Johnson (Mike Johnson Racing B/AD) 0.412 5.464 258.32
 (L) Mark Niver (Billet Bullet Racing A/FD) 0.475 5.518 256.55
Johnson cut the tree down and then ran away from Niver for a surprisingly easy win. Johnson faces Ormsby next round and will not have lane choice.
 (W) Chris Ricketts (Burlington Automotive A/FD) 0.499 5.405 258.54
 (L) Mitch Myers (EPHA Hose Protection A/FD) 0.413 6.048 182.70
Last pair. Myers had a great light, but his car wasn't up to the task. Ricketts advances to meet Wells in round two and will have lane choice after running his best elapsed time of the weekend.

Results for Elimination Round 2
ENNIS, Texas - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 2
eliminations in Top Alcohol Dragster at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing
Series, 17th annual O'Reilly Fall Nationals presented by Castrol Syntec:
 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) David Wells (Blue Bunny B/AD) 0.465 5.473 258.17
 (L) Chris Ricketts (Burlington Automotive A/FD) 0.472 7.146 117.24
12:50 PM Ricketts launched, shook a bit, then there was a POP from his car and he slowed.
 (W) Brandon Johnson (Mike Johnson Racing B/AD) 0.461 5.372 261.24
 (L) Gary Ormsby Jr (Race Day Cigars A/FD) 0.501 31.508 14.42
Ormsby's car blew the tires away instantly, sending dense clouds of smoke in the air. Nice run by Johnson, his best of the weekend, to earn lane choice against Wells in the semifinals.
 (W) Rick Santos (Jack O'Bannon B/AD) 0.471 5.314 265.72
 (L) Bruce Bowler (Phoenix Apparel A/FD) 0.519 5.379 264.47
Bowler was late, then ran a good lap, but Santos was on time and then ran his best lap of the weekend.
 (W) Arthur Gallant (Pep Boys Racing A/FD) 0.511 5.414 250.76
 (L) Jason Cannon (capsmarine.com B/AD) 0.459 5.531 251.04
Cannon had Gallant covered, but his car fell off the pace at half track and Gallant edged by for the win, Cannon running his slowest time of the weekend. Gallant's margins (negative means he's trailing): 60ft(-0.055), 330 ft(-0.092), 660ft(-0.045), 1,000ft(0.028). MOV: 0.0654 seconds (approximately 24 feet). 2002 champion Gallant meets 2001 champion Santos in the semifinals and Santos has lane choice, by a tenth of a second!

Results for Elimination Round 3
ENNIS, Texas - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 3
eliminations in Top Alcohol Dragster at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing
Series, 17th annual O'Reilly Fall Nationals presented by Castrol Syntec:
 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) David Wells (Blue Bunny B/AD) 0.511 5.460 259.59
 (L) Brandon Johnson (Mike Johnson Racing B/AD) 0.430 5.777 246.77
2:39 PM It's 63 degrees, 60 percent relative humidity, the barometer 30.38, the track temperature 80 degrees, still overcast (once again the promised "clearing" has not shown up).

This one was wild! Johnson slapped a big holeshot on Wells, but Johnson's front end went skyward, the car up on the wheelie bar. He pedaled and the front end went up once again. Johnson stayed in the throttle, but wit all the pedaling, Wells went by for the win.
 (W) Rick Santos (Jack O'Bannon B/AD) 0.468 5.314 266.11
 (L) Arthur Gallant (Pep Boys Racing A/FD) 0.510 11.065 72.20
Last year's champ versus this year's champ, and Santos showed what we've been missing by not having him on the circuit this year. Gallant launched into severe shake and the engine went silent quickly. Meanwhile, Santos streaked down the left lane, easily earning lane choice against Wells in the all-supercharged final round.

Results for Final Round
ENNIS, Texas - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of final, round 4
eliminations in Top Alcohol Dragster at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing
Series, 17th annual O'Reilly Fall Nationals presented by Castrol Syntec:
 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) David Wells (Blue Bunny B/AD) 0.524 5.492 258.69
 (L) Rick Santos (Jack O'Bannon B/AD) 0.707 5.344 264.55
4:31 PM Wells needed to find more than a tenth of a second somewhere to have a shot against Santos. Santos gave it to him, way late. Santos was reeling him in all the way, but ran out of race track. Here are Wells' incremental margins: 60ft(0.112), 330ft(0.086), 660ft(0.069), 1,000ft(0.051). MOV: 0.0359 seconds (approximately 14 feet). A clear underdog, Wells ignored the odds, did his thing, and pulled off a huge holeshot upset for a treasured "Wally."
