Lady Broncs Drop Sixth Straight Road Game

Final Stats

The Lady Broncs dropped game six of their six-game road trip to the University of Texas by a score of 75-44 on Wednesday (Dec. 6) in Austin, TX, at the Frank Erwin Center. The six-game road skid drops the Lady Broncs to 3-7 on the season.

Led by sophomore Tiffany Jackson, The Longhorns jumped out to a quick 11-0 lead before an Aleeya Grigsby (Nacogdoches, TX/Nacogdoches H.S.) lay-up put the Lady Broncs on the board with 15:49 to play in the first half made the score 11-2. Jackson scored four points in the opening minutes of the game to spark the Texas run.

UTPA went on a seven point run to cut the lead to 11-7 on a Tamara Vaughn (Houston, TX/Blinn College) jumper at the 14:50 mark. The Longhorns quickly answered with a run of their own, making it a double-digit game at 23-7 with 10:58 remaining in the game as Jackson hit two free throws caused by a Rose Esther Jean (Missouri City, TX/Hightower H.S.) foul.

Following a three minute scoring drought for both teams, Brittainey Raven connected on a pair of free throw for UT to increase their lead, making the score 30-13 with 3:50 remaining in the opening half.

The Lady Broncs answered with a LeKeisha Gray (Muskogee, OK/Butler County C.C.) trey, and went on a 9-2 scoring run which was capped by another Gray three-pointer to close out the first half of play. Gray finished the first 20 minutes of play with six points on 2-5 shooting, including 2-3 from behind the arc while adding one steal.

The Lady Broncs headed to the locker room down 10 by a score of 32-22, following a trio of three-point shots by newcomers Grigsby and Gray.

Leading the way for Texas was Jackson who collected eight points on 2-4 shooting and 4-4 from the foul line. Erika Arriaran also added eight points for the `Horns on 3-7 shooting, including 2-4 from behind the arc while dishing out four assists.

The Lady Broncs shot 38 percent from the field on 9-24 shooting to the Longhorn's 39 percent (12-31). UTPA grabbed 16 rebounds to Texas' 19, but lost the turnover battle in the first half 15-9, being outscored by the `Horns 13-2 in points off turnovers. The Texas bench also provided a spark for the Longhorns as they scored 10 points to the Lady Bronc's two.

The second half picked up where it left off, on a Gray jumper, but the Longhorns responded by going on a 17-7 run in the first 10 minutes of play. Jackson scored seven points out of the gate, including a lay-up at the 10:23 mark to make the score 49-29.

Texas held its lead at 20 points when Erneisha Bailey stole the ball from the Lady Broncs and took it the distance of the floor, scoring a lay-up to make the score 54-34.

Texas' defensive pressure proved to be too much for UTPA as the Lady Broncs were held to 22 percent in the second half on 6-27 shooting. The Longhorns stepped up offensively in the second half, shooting 64 percent from the field on 16-25 from the field. Texas closed out the final eight minutes play by going on a 21-10 run.

UTPA finished the game shooting 29 percent from the field to Texas' 50 percent, going 3-14 from behind the arc to the `Horns 5-7. Defensively, Texas caused 24 Lady Bronc miscues while out-rebounding UTPA 37-27. The Longhorns showed their depth as their bench outscored the Lady Bronc's bench 23-8.

Reigning Independent Newcomer of the Week, Gray scored a team-high 15 points on 4-12 shooting, including 2-6 from three-point range while adding one assist and one steal on the evening. Grigsby was the only other Lady Bronc to score in double-digits as she went 5-16 from the field, adding six rebounds, in 35 minutes of action.

Three Longhorns scored in double-digits in Jackson, Arriaran and Ashley Lindsey. Jackson led all scorers with 21 points on 6-10 from the field and 9-12 from the charity stripe while adding three steals and three assists, in 34 minutes of action. Arriaran and Lindsey scored 19 and 15 points, respectively.

The Lady Broncs (3-7) return to the hardwood when they take on Texas State at the UTPA Fieldhouse on Sunday (Dec. 10) with a 2:00 p.m. tip.
