9:19 PM - ROSEMONT, Ill.---The Chicago Wolves came within
eight seconds of shutting out the Milwaukee Admirals and
chased opposing goaltender Pekka Rinne with four goals
in the first 27:52 of play, as they sunk the squad, 4-1,
in Game 5 of the West Division Semifinal at the Allstate
Arena on Thursday night. The Wolves lead the series,
3-games-to-2. Chicago
goaltender Ondrej Pavelec (3-2) kicked out 26 shots
before Mark Matheson logged Milwaukee's only goal at
19:52 of the third period. Pavelec threw up his arm at
the long shot, which was headed over the net, catching
the puck on his blocker and causing it to flop down into
the goal. Rinne (2-3), who
shut out the Wolves on Wednesday night, stopped just 19
shots before being relieved by Dov Grumet-Morris
following the second period. Grumet-Morris made
six saves for Milwaukee (2-3).
"We got some early breaks and then had some
guys thread the needle to set up some early breathing
room tonight," said Wolves Head Coach John
Anderson. "Pavelec settled in really well, he had
an outstanding game. He saved us on some of those
penalty kills." Left wing
Brett Sterling needed just 1:59 to get the Wolves on the
board, taking a pass from linemate Jason Krog and
roofing it over Rinne to give the Wolves their earliest
lead of the series, 1-0.
Chicago (3-2) made that lead two before the
first frame hit the halfway mark. Rinne got a hand on a
shot by defenseman Nathan Oystrick, knocking it up on
top of the net. Still alive, the puck bounced off
the twine and with a little help from the stick of
Darren Haydar, found its way down behind the goal
line. The Wolves continued the
onslaught early in the second period, working themselves
into a three-goal lead with a quick tally off the stick
of defenseman Brian Fahey. The Glenview native
snuck between a pair of Admirals, straight into a pass
from Steve Martins and one-timed a bullet by Rinne at
4:54 of the middle frame.
Right wing Joe Motzko followed suit three
minutes later to give the Wolves a 4-0 lead. The
28-year-old forward controlled the puck behind the net
and stickhandled around the Milwaukee defense to the
front of the crease before flipping a backhand past
Rinne at 7:52 of the second period.
The Wolves look to close out the series when
they travel to Milwaukee for Game 6 at the Bradley
Center on Sat., April 26 at 7:30 p.m.
