LOS ANGELES - Gonzalo
Vargas scored twice in 13 minutes to lift Uruguay a 2-0 win over
Romania in a soccer exhibition Tuesday night at the Coliseum.
The victory was the second in as many games for Uruguay coach
Oscar Tabarez, who was rehired in March. Tabarez coached Uruguay in
the 1990 World Cup.
Vargas scored his first goal in the 46th minute. Fabian
Estoyanoff pounced on a loose ball and chipped it to Vargas, who
converted a 7-yard diagonal shot inside the right post.
Goalkeeper Fabian Carini, a member of Uruguay's 2002 World Cup
team, kept Romania scoreless with a nice play in the 52nd minute.
Carini deflected Daniel Niculae's curling 23-yard shot from the left
flank over the crossbar.
Vargas ended the scoring in the 59th minute. Goalkeeper Bogdan
Lobont dived to deflect Jorge Fucile's chip with his right hand but
an unmarked Vargas secured the ball and tucked a shot inside the
right post.
Uruguay's lineup included AS Monaco midfielder Diego Perez and
Sinaloa forward Sebastian Abreu, who led Mexico's first division in
scoring during the past two seasons.
Juventus forward Adrian Mutu and forward Marius Niculae from
Belgium's Standard Liege started for Romania.
Uruguay will play Serbia and Montenegro on Saturday.
Romania will travel to Chicago for games against Northern Ireland
on Friday night and Colombia on Saturday.
