At today’s Cubs game, Heather and I are back on the lawn fundraising for her school and two fans just let us know that we were on TV. Here is a question: Where the heck are the darn cameras from WGN? Please write in if you know.

The Ultimate Sports Fan sent me this article from USA TODAY’s blog. The article highlights a tee shirt for the Cub’s phenom, Kosuke Fukudome. His arrival on the Cubs has been met by much anticipation and fanfare. There are drunk dudes all over Wrigley dressed like the Karate Kid, donning head bands and Bruce Lee iconography on their shirts.
Most of this fanfare is in good spirits, but many of it is stretching into the offensive realm. Bastardizing Kosuke Fukudome’s name, the crowds yells: “F-You, Do …

Night Games »

Tonight was my first night game of the season. I love and hate night games. I appreciate them because I still feel that they are a novelty at Wrigley…I mean, we went so long without the lights. If you have lived in Chicago your whole life, you can’t help but feel in awe.
But, everything about a night game can be painful. The El ride commute is the worst…you are trying to get home from work, to get to the game, and you are packed …

If we lived on Grace Street, this title would be clever…instead, it is just sad.
My last entry screamed of the euphoria of being “back on top.” Mostly this was in reference to getting in the good graces of the “Most Powerful Rooftop Owner in Wrigleyville.” There is no greater reward than bartering your garage for access to the glorious rooftops on Sheffield Ave . But, I must admit, there was one other small advantage…
Last year, at this time, this car was parked in our garage. …

In a strange twist of fate, we got a THE call yesterday. A call that we had hoped for all off-season long.
Our friend, the anonymous and powerful rooftop owner, wanted to barter for another year. He parks his VERY expensive car in our garage and in exchange, we get to come up on the roof top all season long. Now, this is a very valuable trade. One parking spot in Wrigley sells for $20-25 per game. On Opening Day and for big …

We are planning a trip in the summer to go to the EuroCup. For you non-football fans, this is event is like a World Cup, but just a big ole’ tourney for the Europeans to decide who is the best national team of Europe. Equivalent tournaments are La Copa America for all of Latin America and the African Cup for all of Africa. We are traveling to Switzerland and Austria for this event in June and we, of course, are combining it with sightseeing and some rest …

While waiting for the Cubs to come back to the neighborhood, you have time to get inventive and enjoy some un-sports related fun. Traditionally, Brew and View at the Vic is the natural choice for a movie and a beer. Brew and View at the Vic
Well, you can change it up a bit at Vine’s on Clark…they have a Tuesday Movie Night with two-for-one pasta specials and half price bottles of wine. Movie Night at Vines
After watching the Women’s NCAA championship game, we enjoyed dinner, …

Ok, I did say that the Uncommon Ground was the “most Sunday-civil” brunch places in the neighborhood. Well, that is true (generally), but NOT on game day. Uncommon Ground for Sunday Brunch But NOT on GAME DAY
While my cousin parked behind the house, I ran to the Uncommon Ground to get on the wait-list and it was 45 minutes long.
So, we headed to Yakzie and grabbed Bloody Mary’s and Burgers. Yakzie’s for Burgers…Instead of Brunch
We were delightfully surprise with their Tang burger which comes with homemade …

On a Sunday Cubs morning, Saturday-night slumber is broken by helicopters and airplanes swarming outside our place. Some of these choppers are advertising planes. “RedBull GIVES you WINGS.” Some are television choppers.
But, the oddest thing is being woken up by a small air fleet on game days. This is a spring and summer ritual.
Since we are awake, we are headed to brunch at one of the best (and most Sunday-civil) brunch places in the neighborhood.

We will then go to …

I teach ice skating on Saturday mornings at an unreasonable hour (6am). When I left for the rink, I was in snow pants, a ski jacket and I still saw one lingering, black snow pile behind our garage. Come 12pm- right before the Cubs game- it seems as though Spring decided to show up. There is sun and 65 degree weather. The snow pile has vanished into muck.
Ever the skeptic, I drove home with the snow pants and superstitiously decided to leave my snow …
