It was a relatively warm Sunday in Chicago and the Chicago Blackhawks were playing in their earliest game I can ever remember – the puck dropped at 11:30 am. 2.5 hours earlier than their usual 2:00 pm March Sunday afternoon start time.

My original plan for today was to fly to Pittsburgh in the morning, attend the Green Bay Packers at Pittsburgh Steelers game and fly back to Chicago after the game. That plan was changed when the game, originally scheduled for 1:00 pm ET, was changed to a 4:15 pm ET kick off – meaning I could no longer make my 6:50 pm ET flight back to Chicago.

With tickets hovering around face value for Game 2 of the Western Conference Finals in Detroit, Blackhawks Jim and I decided to make the trip to Detroit. The drive, around 4.5 hours from Chicago, is possible without having to stay over. Obviously you need to leave Chicago early enough to get to the game on time and then leave immediately after the game ends so you can get back to Chicago at a reasonable hour.
