Tonight game was just one of those nights. The wife and I did not have any plans and my first child is due soon so I decided to spend a free Friday night at U.S. Cellular Field. I probably will not be getting to the Southside much more this season.
Beg, Borrow and Deal
I bought a premium lower level box seat (season ticket face value is $44, day of game face value is $58) for $10 as soon as I got off the train.
What I do not understand is why the …

It was a lazy Sunday afternoon in Wrigleyville as I attended my 20th MLB game of the season. Alfonso Soriano hit two home runs to lead the Cubs to a 10-5 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks.
This was the 10th four-game series in which I attended every game of the series. I have never witnessed a four-game series sweep. The results of the four game series I have attended are below:
July 1994: Red Sox (3) at Athletics (1)
June 2001: Padres (1) at Giants (3) – only …

In all the games I have attended at Wrigley Field, I cannot ever remember seeing the wave. That all changed today when, in the 8th inning, the crowd at Wrigley Field not only started but continued the wave around the stadium several times. While the wave occurs in stadiums all over the world, most traditionalists feel the wave is inappropriate to perform at a sporting event. It shows the fans have become bored with the game and need another form of entertainment. For this reason, the wave is inexcusable at …

Today I planned to attend two sporting events. First was the Chicago Cubs game scheduled at 1:20 pm. Second I planned to drive to Milwaukee for the Bucks Game 6 playoff game versus the Atlanta Hawks. There was only one problem. The Bucks game started at 6:00 pm – meaning the Cubs game needed to end around 4:15 pm in order for me to make the Bucks game on time (it takes a minimum of 90 minutes to drive from Wrigley Field to the Bradley Center). Any delay in the …

The Diamondbacks scored five runs in the fourth inning and seven runs in the seventh inning which lead them to a 13-1 win over the Cubs today. Not the most exciting game if you are a Cubs fan. But there was some “off-field” entertainment that kept the game interesting.
First, Mexicans protested Arizona’s new immigration law outside of Wrigley Field since the Cubs was playing Arizona. Second, Vancouver Canucks fans were booed incessantly as they walked along the aisle between the 100 and 200 sections. The Chicago Blackhawks are opening up …

Ask Forgiveness Not Permission: Nationals at Cubs

The best part about weekday afternoon Cubs games in April is that you can sit wherever you want. So buy the cheapest seats possible and stroll down to the lower level. Sitting in the first rows of the 200 level is about as easy as it gets and the seats are good since there are no obstructed views. Plus, the ushers do not check tickets. It is possible to “sneak” into the 100 level of Wrigley Field but most ushers check tickets so be diligent.

On a July day, when the sun is shining upon Wrigley Field and the Cubs announce that the game is sold out, it is easy to forget about a cold day in April. Just like tonight.
The Cubs would lead you to believe that every game at Wrigley Field is in high demand, but this is just not the case. First, tonight’s game was not sold out. Even though the announced attendance was 37,440 (technically 91% full) the stadium was easily half empty – due to …

Carlos, Sean, Carlos, Carlos: One of These Things Is Not Like The Other

It was the first night game of the season for the Chicago Cubs. It was also the Cubs first game at home since announcing Carlos Zambrano would move to the bullpen. Thus, before the game, my friend, Frank Garrett, asked if we thought we would see the Carlos trifecta pitch in the same game – Carlos Silva, Carlos Zambrano and Carlos Marmol.
Silva was the starting pitcher so we had one Carlos under our belt. After Silva pitched seven innings, Lou Piniella brought in Sean Marshall to pitch …

The Chicago White Sox have a tradition – after every home run a White Sox player hits fireworks shoot off over the scoreboard. On top of this, one of the White Sox main promotions is fireworks night. Tonight, after the game, the White Sox had a scheduled fireworks night. What I did not expect was the fireworks display throughout the game. Andruw Jones, Carlos Quentin and Paul Konerko all hit home runs to give the White Sox a 5-2 lead through six innings.
But, the game appeared to be the Mariners …

July 23, 2009 will live in infamy for Chicago White Sox fans and definitely for me. That’s the day Mark Buehrle threw the 18th perfect game in MLB history – one of baseball’s rarest achievements. Since I started attending baseball games I always wanted to see a no-hitter. And, in the 823 regular season MLB games I attended before last July 23, I never saw one let alone see a perfect game. The best I witnessed was five one-hitters and several “close calls.”
So with Buehrle pitching against the Tampa Bay …
