Cycle-Schmycle
On May 18, 1998, I witnessed a rare event in baseball…Mike Blowers (of all random players) hit for the Cycle at Comiskey and I was there to bare witness. At the time, Andrew mentioned the significance of the cycle: as rare as a no-hitter, only 241 cycles in baseball history (in 1998), with players like Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio and Mickey Mantle being among those enshrined in the stat books.
Nine years later, while I was basking in the glory and luck of seeing a Cycle-even if it was Mike Blowers- i found some disturbing news. Andrew, my brother-in-law, father-in-law, and mother-in-law saw another cycle (June 4, 2007/Mark Ellis).
I go to around 25 baseball games a year. My mother-in-law…not so much. Strange? Yes. Upsetting? Definitely. But, just dumb luck…of course.
Then, tonight, Andrew saw ANOTHER cycle at Comiskey Park (now U.S. Cellular Field) by Carlos Gomez of the Twins.
I know that statistically speaking cycles are rare and occur as infrequently as a no-hitter. But, let’s get real. This should be a cool statistic that you can throw around to your friends. Not one that you share with your mother-in-law.
