Dawn of the Dead…Seeing Rooftop Red

1 April 2008 No Comment

Even at the earliest moments on Opening Day, there is some drama worth capturing.

We flew into from LA at 2am on Opening Day. As we drove back from our flight into Midway, we pulled into the neighborhood and I told Andrew to turn right onto Sheffield.

We slowed passed the opening in the right field wall to see the vast park…dark, covered in bunting and waiting for the next day. To our right, were the Roof Tops- silent and quiet with only a few lights in the window.

Pacing in front of the rooftop was the most powerful Roof Top owner in Wrigleyville. So powerful…he parked his $450K car in our two-car garage- giving it the elbow room it deserves. Note: his car is worth more than our house.

There he was…pacing in front of his newest investment- an $8M building that was finished just days before. He purchased an empty CTA parking lot for a cool $6.25M and then erected a state of the art roof top. In case you are wondering, the roof tops get more luxurious as you go south on Sheffield. Each one was an experiment. With every new construction, there was an attempt to perfect the rooftop experience.

It is understandable to think that this kind of investment might cause a bit of “night-before” nerves, but to see him pacing in front of that kind of money, makes it real. We pulled over and chatted for a while, and he opened up that he had bought the Budweiser House for $8.3M.

For fans all over the Chicago-land area, Opening Day is about the game on the field. But, the reality is that there is some mellow drama off and around the field.

As I tried to check my email today, here is what I read…seems like someone we know can’t pay the rent to Wrigley.

Roof Top Red Leave Wrigley in Red

Now, we have partaken our share of beers and brats on the rooftops so we remain agnostic to these scandalous debates. But, it is my goal to shift your attention to everything that you may be missing in and around the circus of the neighborhood.
Well before the first pitch is thrown, the action has started.

Before we headed home, we took a picture or two with the small bit of calm before the storm of Opening Day- two tents waiting on Sheffield for the bleachers to open- the first fans to arrive for the season.
