Grumpy Old Men: Edmonds as a Cub?
Its late. I am tired. And, I just found out that Edmonds was traded to the Cubs.
Now, if this was 1998 and Edmonds was 27 years old, then it might not be such a bad thing. But, the reality is that the Padres didn’t want him, and now, he is pawned off on the Cubs.
Adding insult to this injury…Cubs fans hate him. In fact, I would argue that of the historic “slug” section in the St. Louis line-up (Rentieria, Pujols, Roland, Edmonds), Edmonds was the most hated “tool” in the chest. In fact, I found this picture on a random Cubs blog. A renegade fan with a mild talent for photo shop made this picture out of Edmonds as a Brian Boitano look-a-like.
At this point in the season, I cannot imagine what a 37 year old Edmonds can bring to a team-especially when the fans hate him and some of the players do, too.
Let’s flash back to July 19, 2004, when Carlos Zambrano made the vengeful choice to throw a pitch right at Edmonds in retaliation for home-run in previous inning. Let’s imagine what the locker room is going to be like tomorrow.
It seems as though Edmond’s first day is this Thursday against the team that cut him-The Padres. In a twist, Greg Maddux will be pitching…two grumpy old men trying to command the field. It remains to be seen how this will all turn out.
