Game Story

ST. PETERSBURG, Florida (Ticker) -- The Tampa Bay Devil Rays received a stellar pitching performance from an unlikely source.

Spot starter Bryan Rekar baffled Baltimore over 8 1/3 innings, as the Devil Rays posted back-to-back victories for the first time in three weeks, 2-1 over the Baltimore Orioles.

Rekar (2-3), who has shifted between the starting rotation and the bullpen, allowed the lone run on a homer by Brady Anderson with one out in the ninth inning. He threw only 86 pitches, scattering six hits with four strikeouts and no walks.

The 27-year-old righthander became only the second Tampa Bay starter since May 11 to notch a victory, a span of 19 games. Esteban Yan earned the other win, at Seattle on May 20.

Roberto Hernandez relieved Rekar after the homer to Anderson and retired the last two batters on six pitches to record his sixth save.

The Devil Rays, who completed the worst month in franchise history with a 4-3 win over Baltimore on Wednesday, posted consecutive victories for the first time since May 11-12, against the New York Yankees and Toronto Blue Jays.

Fred McGriff and Gerald Williams provided all the offense Rekar needed with run-scoring singles in the first and fifth innings respectively.

Scott Erickson (2-2) was the hard-luck loser despite allowing two runs and eight hits in a complete-game effort. He struck out six and walked none.
