Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- The Chicago Cubs treated the biggest crowd of the season at Wrigley Field to a laugher.

Sammy Sosa, Todd Hundley and Julio Zuleta homered to pace an 18-hit attack as the Cubs crushed the Los Angeles Dodgers, 20-1, to equal their most lopsided victory in nearly six years.

The Cubs matched the margin in a 26-7 triumph at Colorado on August 18, 1995, the last time they scored 20 runs.

"It's great to win a game by this many runs but it's only one game," Sosa said.

Chicago had not scored 20 runs at Wrigley Field since a 22-7 romp over Houston on June 3, 1987. The Dodgers had not allowed 20 since May 20, 1967, also at Wrigley Field.

Julian Tavarez (3-1), who leads the National League with a 1.49 ERA, allowed one run and six hits over seven innings with two walks and a career-high eight strikeouts.

Tavarez was making his first start since being fined Wednesday for anti-gay comments he uttered last weekend in San Francisco. He also served a one-game suspension earlier this week for a preseason altercation with Giants third baseman Russ Davis.

"I want to thank the fans for supporting me by cheering me before the game," Tavarez said. "It was great to hear that. I needed that support."

The Cubs clinched their seventh series of the season and improved the National League's best record to 18-11.

"We don't worry about anything like that in May," Cubs manager Don Baylor said. "All we concentrate on is each game. That's where our focus is."

Sosa and Hundley belted two-run homers off starter Darren Dreifort (1-2) in a four-run fourth before the Cubs exploded for eight runs in each of their last two at-bats.

Dreifort yielded four runs and six hits in six innings before the bullpen imploded. Third baseman Chris Donnels, who was making his first major league pitching appearance, finally got the last out in the eighth as Gary Matthews Jr. grounded out.

Terry Adams surrendered seven runs and six hits without retiring a batter in the seventh. Jose Nunez gave up nine runs -- five earned -- in 1 2/3 innings. Nunez also issued five walks.

"I hadn't pitched anywhere since (American) Legion ball but a couple of us extra guys were down in the bullpen and we volunteered to help Nunnie out," Donnels said. "You hate to see that happen to anybody."

Zuleta capped the uprising in the seventh with a pinch three-run homer. Chicago tacked on eight runs in the eighth on just five hits.

Sosa went 3-for-5 with four RBI and narrowly missed a grand slam in the eighth that would have given the Cubs a 23-1 lead. He eventually walked for Chicago's final run.

"It's still only one loss," Dodgers manager Jim Tracy said. "It's that simple. But you don't like to see that happen to a kid (Nunez) like that. I admire him for salvaging our bullpen. A close game turned into a rout."

After Dreifort and Tavarez matched zeroes over the first three innings, the Cubs started the onslaught in the fourth. Bill Mueller led off with a walk and scored on Sosa's 396th career homer.

After Rondell White singled, Hundley, the son of former Chicago catcher Randy Hundley, hit his first homer at Wrigley Field as a member of the Cubs to make it 4-0. He had 11 here as a visiting player.

The Dodgers got back a run in the sixth on Eric Karros' RBI single, but the Cubs broke it open in the seventh, extending the lead to 12-1.

Rookie reliever Courtney Duncan also walked with the bases loaded in the eighth for an RBI in his first major league plate appearance. Duncan closed out the victory with two scoreless innings.

The game drew a crowd of 38,468.
