Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Odalis Perez is making the loss of ace Kevin Brown a lot more tolerable.

Perez allowed just an infield single en route to his first career shutout and Shawn Green and Adrian Beltre drove in three runs apiece as the Los Angeles Dodgers routed the Chicago Cubs, 10-0.

In the best pitching performance of his five-year career, Perez retired the first 18 batters of the game. But speedy Corey Patterson beat out a grounder up the middle that Dodgers shortstop Cesar Izturis juggled for a moment.

Perez (3-1) then got Chris Stynes to bounce into a double play and retired the next seven batters in order. The 23-year-old lefthander has eased the loss of Brown this season by giving the Dodgers five quality starts.

"That was absolutely an phenomenal performance," Dodgers manager Jim Tracy said. "I think it was a bad hop away from a perfect game. If that ball doesn't take a funny hop, Cesar Izturis is going to make that play and throw Corey Patterson out at first base. Izturis did a nice job catching that ball. A lot of shortstops wouldn't have made that play."

"I just wanted to stay on top of my game," Perez said. "I just tried to keep going and get a shutout and try to put my pitches where I wanted to throw them. I was able to throw all my pitches. I used my changeup when I had to and my fastball and curveball too."

Perez has allowed just seven earned runs in his five starts and walked just three. Acquired from the Braves in the deal that sent Gary Sheffield to Atlanta, Perez has held opponents to a .154 batting average this season.

"It's awesome," Dodgers catcher Paul Lo Duca said of Perez's performance. "It's one of those things where it doesn't matter how you do at the plate. You're just rooting for the guy out there because you know every pitch is important and I'm hoping that I'm putting down the right fingers. He had the kind of stuff today that it didn't matter what I put down. I had confidence in it and so did he. He just had special stuff today."

Cubs manager Don Baylor could not offer an answer as to what made Perez too tough.

"I wish I knew," Baylor said. "He threw strikes and changed speeds. He kept the ball away. I believe we hit two balls hard. I know he didn't overpower people, but there was a lot of easy outs."

Despite the loss of Brown, who could return next week, the Dodgers have won eight of 11 and 14 of 20. Los Angeles also has gotten remarkable production from its lefthanded starters, going 9-1 when Perez, Omar Daal or Kazuhisa Ishii start.

Chicago starter Kerry Wood was tagged for five runs and five hits in 5 1/3 innings. The righthander struggled mightily with his control, walking seven and throwing just 62 of 123 pitches for strikes.

"I don't think I had one pitch that I was throwing for a strike," Wood said. "It was a lack of control and a lack of concentration. My curveball was non existent and my fastball was all over the place and therefore the result."

The Dodgers threatened in the opening inning but Wood worked out of trouble. He was able to hold Los Angeles in check into the fifth but a leadoff walk got him in trouble.

Dave Roberts walked on four pitches and took third on a double by Izturis. Lo Duca was hit by a pitch and Green staked the Dodgers to a 2-0 lead with a base hit to right. Beltre added a sacrifice fly later in the inning for a three-run cushion.

Roberts got the Dodgers going again in the sixth, drawing a walk. He stole second and scored on Cesar Izturis' double. Carlos Zambrano took over for Wood and Lo Duca greeted the reliever with an RBI single.

Green made it 6-0 with a double to right and Eric Karros and Beltre stroked back-to-back two-base hits for a nine-run cushion.

Beltre has hit in all 13 of the Dodgers' road games this season and is batting .408 away from home in 2002.

With the only drama Perez's perfect game, the Cubs went down on three flyouts to right in the sixth. Patterson took a strike to open the seventh and then beat the next pitch over the mound. Izturis cut across the diamond and gloved the ball but double-clutched slightly and the speedy Patterson beat the throw.

"I figured I had a chance to leg it out and at that point, I'm not happy about being no-hit," Patterson said. "I'm sure my teammates felt that way too. We only got one hit and it's too bad we couldn't get more."

"Cesar made a great play on the ball but there is nothing he can do. That guy can fly," Perez said.

Los Angeles tacked on a run in the ninth on an RBI single by Lo Duca and Perez closed out his game in impressive fashion in the bottom of the ninth, getting three infield groundouts.
