Game Story

IOWA CITY, Iowa (Ticker) -- Brad Banks made his last home game a memorable one and needed just two quarters to do it. Banks threw two touchdown passes and ran for a pair of scores in the first half as sixth-ranked Iowa opened a big lead and rolled to a 62-10 victory over Northwestern to tie the school record for wins. Banks completed 10-of-10 passes for 197 yards as Iowa (10, 7-0 Big Ten) won its eighth straight game since a 36-31 loss to Iowa State on September 14. They have a chance to win 11 games for the first time in school history when they visit Minnesota next Saturday. "You always remember your last game at Kinnick (Stadium) and this was a good one," coach Kirk Ferentz said. Iowa needs a win at Minnesota and a loss by Ohio State against Illinois or Michigan to win the Big Ten title and play in the Rose Bowl for the first time since 1990. The following season, the Hawkeyes set a school record for wins as they went 10-1 before a 13-13 tie against Brigham Young in the Holiday Bowl. After completing seven passes in the first half, Banks played just one series before watching Iowa's second team continue the thrashing of Northwestern (3-8, 1-6). He also carried five times for 54 yards. "Brad's performance speaks volumes. You just have to look at what he does for our football team week in and week out," Ferentz said. "As far as his stats today, you can't do much better than that." Fred Russell, who sat out last week's 20-3 win over Wisconsin with a hand injury, rushed 17 times for 100 yards as Iowa posted its highest point total since a 62-0 romp over Indiana on October 25, 1997. It was Russell's seventh 100-yard rushing game, giving him 1,025 yards on the season. Iowa scored touchdowns on five of its six possessions in the first half. "Give credit to Kirk and the job he and his coaches and players do," Northwestern coach Randy Walker said. "They just played very well. They took it to us in every aspect of the game." The Hawkeyes began their first drive on the Northwestern 25-yard line and four plays later Jermelle Lewis started the rout with a seven-yard touchdown run. Lewis had 50 yards on 12 carries. Iowa scored on the first play of its second possession with Banks tossing a 40-yard pass to Maurice Brown for a 14-0 lead just 4:15 into the game. Brett Basanez, who was 19-of-29 for 166 yards and an interception, tossed an eight-yard pass to Ashton Aikens to cut the deficit to 14-7 with 8:18 left in the opening quarter. But Banks had a nine-yard TD run and hooked up with Brown on a 65-yard scoring pass before the Wildcats scored again. David Wasilewski kicked a 26-yard field goal to cut Iowa's lead to 28-10 with 5:21 remaining in the second. Banks responded with a 19-yard run just 2:03 later to give the Hawkeyes a 25-point bulge. Iowa stopped Northwestern on the first possession of the second half and freshman Ed Hinkel had a 58-yard punt return for a 42-10 bulge. Banks' final pass of the game was a 28-yard TD to tight end Dallas Clark with 9:36 left in the third. Backup Nathan Chandler, a 6-7 250-pound junior, completed both of his passes, including a 22-yard TD catch by C.J. Jones with 6:43 left in the third. Marcus Schnoor had a five-yard run 2:11 into the fourth to complete the scoring.
