Game StoryGarrison Hearst broke free for a spectacular 96-yard run -- the longest in team history -- 4:08 into overtime to give the San Francisco 49ers a wild 36-30 season-opening victory over the New York Jets.
New York sent the game to overtime on John Hall's 31-yard field goal as time expired, then pinned the 49ers when safety Chris Hayes downed a punt at the San Francisco 4.
But Hearst took a handoff, shed two tacklers at the line of scrimmage and took off for the right sideline. He broke the tackles of defensive backs Kevin Williams and Otis Smith and lunged into the end zone just as linebacker Mo Lewis caught him from behind.
"Someone threw me a block and I thought, `I have a chance here.' My last 10 yards, I was pulling everything I had," said Hearst, who called it his best run since a 99-yard dash in high school.
"It looked like it was all cluttered up and he just popped it outside," Smith said. "I tried to get over to make the tackle, but I couldn't get my hands on him the way I wanted. You've got to give him credit, he just kept his legs pumping."
The 96-yard run broke the previous team mark of 89 yards, set on October 5th, 1952 by Hugh McElhenny. It also helped Hearst finish with 187 yards -- the fourth-highest total in team history -- on 20 carries.
"That's going to go down in history now as one of the great, great runs of all-time," said Niners coach Steve Mariucci. "With blocks downfield, with broken tackles and at a great time, it wasn't in the middle of the game, it was to win it. I didn't even know he scored because of everybody going crazy down there."
The 49ers welcomed back Jerry Rice, who caught one of Steve Young's three touchdown passes, and won their opener for the sixth time in seven years. In Mariucci's NFL debut last season, San Francisco was beaten by Tampa Bay, 13-6.
This was a far cry from that game as the Niners and Jets combined for more than 1,000 yards of total offense.
New York's Glenn Foley outplayed Young in his first opening day start, passing for 415 yards and three scores. But the Jets fell to 1-7 all-time against the 49ers.
"It's very disappointing to fight that hard and lose," New York coach Bill Parcells said. "I think it comes down to just being able to concentrate long enough to win one of those (overtime games). I think we recognized the play, we just didn't make it."
Foley became the first Jets' quarterback to throw for more than 400 yards since Ken O'Brien on November 2nd, 1986.
"I thought he played well, but this is a win or lose business. It's the bottom line that counts," Parcells said.
Hall's 32-yard field goal extended New York's lead to 27-23 with 4:46 left in regulation. But Young drove the Niners 76 yards to the go-ahead score. He hit Hearst for 35 yards to the Jets' 41 and snuck one yard for a first down before finding J.J. Stokes over the middle for a 31-yard touchdown.
Young was 26-for-46 for 363 yards. Stokes caught seven passes for 111 yards and two scores, while Rice -- who missed virtually all of last season with knee injuries -- had six receptions for 86 yards and a touchdown.
"It was a positive just getting this game under my belt. I'm happy just to be back on the field," Rice said. "I'm not in game condition, but I felt the tempo. I think I reacted well.
"I didn't think about the knee. After the (first) play was over, I thought about it, but I went back to the huddle and that was it."
But Foley, the five-year veteran, came through with several clutch passes before Hall's tying field goal. He found Wayne Chrebet for 19 yards on 3rd-and-10, hooked up with Dedric Ward for 22 yards on 4th-and-10 and hit Ward again for 19 yards on 3rd-and-10.
"We did some good things on offense but apparently not enough," Foley said. "We have no excuses. Losing a game like this is tough, it's not the end of the world or the season. We have 15 games to go."
San Francisco had a 7-3 lead after one quarter as Hearst's five-yard run overcame Hall's 24-yard field goal.
Keyshawn Johnson hauled in a 41-yard scoring strike from Foley early in the second quarter, but the 49ers regained a 14-10 lead on a six-yard toss from Young to Stokes just 2:11 before halftime.
Foley and the Jets needed only 98 seconds to answer. A 26-yard interference penalty on cornerback Antonio Langham put the ball at the Niners' 6, where Foley connected with Chrebet for the go-ahead touchdown.
Rookie Wade Richey forged a 17-17 tie with a 22-yard field goal just under six minutes into the second half. Foley responded on the next possession, throwing a 48-yard pass to Chrebet and a 21-yarder to Johnson for his third touchdown.
Chrebet had six catches for 125 yards and Johnson led the Jets with seven receptions, 126 yards and two TDs.
"They made my job easier today," Foley said. "Keyshawn's a great player and I can expect him to have more games like this. This was a career game for him and he is only going to get better. Keyshawn made some great plays and Chrebet made some great plays. I thought they were a little banged up in the secondary so we had opportunities to capitalize on that, and did a few times."
