Game Story

AFC 45, NFC 20

HONOLULU (Ticker) -- Ricky Williams didn't go to the playoffs with the Miami Dolphins, but he enjoyed himself at the Pro Bowl.

Williams rushed for 56 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries, caught three passes for 18 yards and forced a fumble on special teams to earn player of the game honors in his first Pro Bowl as the AFC rolled to a 45-20 rout of the NFC.

The NFL rushing champion with 1,853 yards, Williams broke off an 18-yard run on the AFC's first play from scrimmage and scored on a pair of one-yard carries in the first half when the AFC built a 28-6 lead. He also forced a fumble by Jeremy Shockey of the New York Giants on a kickoff return.

"It was a great experience," Williams said. "Not being here before, I never knew what it was all about. It is really a great week and hopefully I will have the opportunity to come back many, many more times."

The NFC committed seven turnovers, six interceptions.

Jeff Garcia of the San Francisco 49ers started at quarterback due to the injury defections of Brett Favre and Michael Vick and was picked off three times.

Brad Johnson of the Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers threw two touchdowns in the fourth quarter but also as intercepted twice.

Donovan McNabb of the Philadelphia Eagles was picked off once.

Safety Rod Woodson of the Oakland Raiders, who tied for the league lead in interceptions with eight, had two of the picks, and cornerback Ty Law of the New England Patriots returned one 46 yards for a touchdown.

A week after throwing a Super Bowl record five interceptions against the Buccaneers, Rich Gannon of the Raiders completed 12-of-18 passes for 102 yards and two touchdowns. He won the Pro Bowl player of the game award each of the previous two years.

The NFL's regular season MVP, Gannon hit tight end Tony Gonzalez of the Kansas City Chiefs with an 11-yard touchdown in the first quarter and connected with running back Travis Henry of the Buffalo Bills on a 13-yard scoring play in the second.

"I have a lot of fun in Hawaii," Gannon said. "I know what to expect when I compete here with the NFL's best and I think that has helped me do well."

David Akers of the Eagles kicked a 53-yard field goal in the second quarter to set a Pro Bowl record, eclipsing 51-yarders by Morten Andersen in 1989 and Jason Hanson in 2000. Akers also kicked a 45-yard field goal.

The AFC held its biggest lead at 45-6 after Peyton Manning of the Indianapolis Colts hit Hines Ward of the Pittsburgh Steelers with a 32-yard touchdown with 7:31 left.

"I really wanted to throw a TD pass to Jerry Rice," Manning said. "Just to be out here with him all week and to practice with him is a big deal to me."

The NFL's all-time leading receiver, Rice of the Raiders had four catches for 36 yards.

Johnson threw a pair of touchdowns in the final five minutes, hitting Joe Horn of the New Orleans Saints with a 12-yard scoring play and fellow Buccaneer Mike Alstott on a four-yard TD.

"It was an honor to play this game, but to go through the season we had and win the Super Bowl, nothing will compare to that for me," Johnson said.

The AFC has won the last three Pro Bowls, averaging 40 points, and leads the overall series, 17-16. It has a 13-11 lead since the game was moved to Honolulu in 1980.

"You hate to lose," said linebacker LaVar Arrington of the Washington Redskins. "Even when it is fun and the all-star game, you hate to lose. But just to have the opportunity to come out here with the biggest names in the game and be able to rub shoulders with those guys, it is always fun."
