Round 1 |
POMONA, Calif. - POMONA 1 - Notes from round 1 qualifying in
Top Alcohol Funny Car at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 48th
annual CARQUEST Auto Parts Winternationals listing lane, driver name,
elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Right Lane: Dan Dickey No Time, Now #1
12:29 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 70 degrees,
relative humidity 25 percent, barometer 29.02 inches, adjusted altitude
2,093 feet, track temperature 87 degrees.
Not a great start for the alky cars and for Dan Dickey particular.
This is his first ride in Randy Goodwin's racer and he has a problem
keeping the car off the concrete. He started in the middle of the lane
and by 1000ft the headers were taking the paint off the wall. Didn't
appear to be a lot of damage but at the least it's new headers for the
right side. Dickey ran a 6.202/171.21, but that will be DQd. Left Lane: Rian Konno Runs 7.909/240.00, Now #1
Right Lane: Mike Drake Runs 21.216/36.10, Now #2
Not much to talk about in this pair either. They both lose
traction right at the hit but Konno got back on the throttle after
countless stabs. Drake shook hard and decided just to coast on out. Left Lane: Russ Parker Runs 6.157/218.87, Now #1
Right Lane: Alexis De Joria Runs 18.589/44.04, Now #3 Parker
is the next car loose at the hit but he manages to hook it up and go to
a very temporary #1 spot. De Joria lost traction at the hit and never
recovered. Left Lane: S. Gasparrelli Runs 5.927/241.02, Now #2
Right Lane: B. Harrington Runs 5.846/247.97, Now #1
Finally we have two cars in the five second zone! Harrington draws
the short straw and gets to be #1 for the moment. Gasparrelli shook
pretty hard but gathered it back up to finish his run. Left Lane: Bret Williamson Runs 5.770/242.80, Now #1
Right Lane: Jeff Carroll Runs 10.243/83.53, Now #6
Carroll fired and fell back by 330ft. His early numbers looked
pretty good: Jeff Carroll's incremental times: 60ft-0.955 sec.,
330ft-2.852. Even better though in the left lane for Williamson. He's
first to the 5.7s this weekend of course he's not the leader. Right Lane: Mark Woznichak Runs 14.457/61.37, Now #7
Instant smoke for the painter, Woznichak. Left Lane: Sean O'Bannon Runs 7.015/110.81, Now #6
Right Lane: Don Hudson Runs 5.831/242.71, Now #2
O'Bannon has the same problems as the others and had to call his
run off early. Hudson got pretty darn close to the cones on the big end
but manages to leave everything where it belonged. Left Lane: John Patton Runs 5.727/234.57, Now #1
Right Lane: Ron August Jr Runs 5.879/211.23, Now #5
Patton jumps to the top of the field with a nice looking run that
stayed right in the middle of the lane. August has something go away
after 1000ft and trailed smoke...and oil, from there to the finish.
We're down at 12:59 p.m. Left Lane: Doug Gordon Runs 5.753/258.81, Now #2
Right Lane: Paul Anderson Runs 6.015/247.93, Now #8
1:05 p.m. and we're back. Anderson is here from Colorado and makes
the most of his first hit. He traveled about 1500ft on his run. Gordon
just misses the mark set by Patton. Left Lane: Dennis Taylor Runs 7.273/123.09, Now #12
Right Lane: Hank Coolidge Runs 5.747/252.52, Now #2
Coolidge takes a shot at Patton's 5.727 and just misses. Taylor
was loose at the hit and it really never got better. He gave it up after
half track. Left Lane: Brian Hough Runs 5.617/255.29, Now #1
Right Lane: Sean Bellemeur Runs 6.202/180.36, Now #12
That was expensive. Hough goes way low for the class but trailed
smoke through the lights. Bellemeur didn't get that far and was trailing
his share of smoke before 1000ft. Left Lane: Jay Payne Runs 5.721/248.75, Now #3
Right Lane: Frank Manzo Runs 5.540/262.23, Now #1
And we save the best for last. Manzo starts out in the 5.5s and
once again shows the field how it's done. Payne was no slug (pun
intended) but will finish round 1 in the third spot.

POMONA, Calif. - POMONA 1 - Notes from round 2 qualifying in
Top Alcohol Funny Car at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 48th
annual CARQUEST Auto Parts Winternationals listing lane, driver name,
elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best
prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Dan Dickey Runs 10.324/82.59, Now #19
No Prior Run
12:52 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 73 degrees,
relative humidity 30 percent, barometer 28.94 inches, adjusted altitude
2,440 feet, track temperature 91 degrees.
Certainly more sun on the track but the Dragsters ran pretty well a
few minutes ago. Dickey took Goodwin's car for a slide again st the wall
on his first hit but all that shows today is a slight scrape and a new
header. Again the car goes right on him and he has to lift. The
difference today is the centerline was a lot softer and he didn't cross
it. Left Lane: Mike Drake No Time, Now #23
Best prior run: 21.216/36.10, Was #22
Right Lane: Jason Rupert Runs 10.294/84.14, Now #19
No Prior Run Not quite sure what
happened here. Drake couldn't get the car to light the second light and
Rupert sounded like he didn't have the rpms high enough at the hit. His
car shook hard but the run was over early. Left Lane: Alexis De Joria Runs 24.785/27.48, Now #22
Best prior run: 18.589/44.04, Was #22
Right Lane: Rian Konno Runs 15.374/54.69, Now #17
Best prior run: 7.909/240.00, Was #17 This
was just downright UGLY! Both cars became a blur in the shake at no more
than 20ft from the starting line. I really could read the side of
Konno's car from the starting line. Left Lane: Mark Woznichak Runs 5.825/248.89, Now #9
Best prior run: 14.457/61.37, Was #21
Right Lane: Dennis Taylor Runs 5.697/252.57, Now #3
Best prior run: 7.273/123.09, Was #16 Good
to see Lions starter, Larry Sutton, backing Taylor to the starting line.
His bad back has slowed him a bit for a few years. Something helped as
that was the straightest run out of that Plumbing Concepts car that I've
seen in awhile. Woz improves from his first hit and just misses the top
half of the show. Left Lane: Jeff Carroll Runs 5.749/249.58, Now #7
Best prior run: 10.243/83.53, Was #19
Right Lane: Sean O'Bannon Runs 5.856/256.55, Now #13
Best prior run: 7.015/110.81, Was #17 Bellemeur
is now on the bump with his 6.202. That changes as both cars pedal their
way into the field. O'Bannon had to drive through some pretty heavy
shake to secure his spot but it was a pretty clean pass for Carroll. Left Lane: Sean Bellemeur Runs 5.647/254.90, Now #3
Best prior run: 6.202/180.36, Was #18
Right Lane: Russ Parker Runs 13.130/78.21, Now #18
Best prior run: 6.157/218.87, Was #17 Bellemeur
takes car from outside to #3 after a nice easy 1500ft run. Did I mention
the car moved around a bit? Parker shook his brains out from 20ft until
he lifted, which was pretty quickly. Left Lane: Paul Anderson Runs 5.863/249.49, Now #16
Best prior run: 6.015/247.93, Was #17
Right Lane: S. Gasparrelli Runs 5.837/250.00, Now #13
Best prior run: 5.927/241.02, Was #16 Gasparrelli
has decided to change his luck any finally had his racer painted. It
looks very nice and he does manage to get the car a little deeper into
the program. Anderson gets into the field but it's on the bump. I'm sure
that's not going to last! Left Lane: Ron August Jr Runs 5.775/252.71, Now #11
Best prior run: 5.879/211.23, Was #17
Right Lane: Bret Williamson Runs 5.782/242.84, Now #10
Best prior run: 5.770/242.80, Was #10 August's
car appeared to jump straight off the ground in the 1-2 shift and he had
to pedal through the shake. Williamson slows very slightly from his
Thursday hit. Oh, Anderson was bumped by August. Knew it wouldn't last
long. Left Lane: B. Harrington Runs 5.761/246.21, Now #10
Best prior run: 5.846/247.97, Was #15
Right Lane: Doug Gordon Runs 5.665/258.62, Now #4
Best prior run: 5.753/258.81, Was #9 Harrington's
run got all my attention as he used more of the lane closest to the wall
than the rest. Gordon on the other hand was a tenth quicker and resides
well into the top half of the show now. Left Lane: Don Hudson Runs 5.678/251.72, Now #5
Best prior run: 5.831/242.71, Was #14
Right Lane: John Patton Runs 9.172/92.66, Now #8
Best prior run: 5.727/234.57, Was #7 Hudson
certainly steps up his program. A good looking pass moves him from close
to the bump to a strong top half car. Patton shook hard and wasn't under
power after 300ft. Left Lane: Clint Thompson Runs 5.712/250.88, Now #8
Best prior run: 5.747/252.52, Was #9
Right Lane: Jay Payne Runs 5.634/257.24, Now #3
Best prior run: 5.721/248.75, Was #7 Thompson
picks up a tad but Payne makes an even bigger move. The Thunderslug is
all the way up to #3 behind Manzo and Hough. Left Lane: Frank Manzo Runs 5.555/261.78, Now #1
Best prior run: 5.540/262.23, Was #1
Right Lane: Brian Hough No Time, Now #2
Best prior run: 5.617/255.29, Was #2 And
here's the final pair of qualifiers for Alcohol Funny Car in this
session. Hough goes 6.662/148.74 but it will be erased due to those two
pesky cones that he ran over at half track. Mercy that car got loose!

Round 3 |
POMONA, Calif. - POMONA 1 - Notes from final, round 3
qualifying in Top Alcohol Funny Car at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing
Series, 48th annual CARQUEST Auto Parts Winternationals listing lane,
driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order
following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order
prior to run:
Left Lane: Jason Rupert Runs 5.791/250.51, Now #14
Best prior run: 10.294/84.14, Was #20
Right Lane: Alexis De Joria Runs 9.094/97.71, Now #21
Best prior run: 18.589/44.04, Was #22 Weather
conditions: air temperature 75 degrees, relative humidity 19 percent,
barometer 28.91 inches, adjusted altitude 2,467 feet, track temperature
86 degrees.
We begin the session with Manzo at #1 and O'Bannon at #16. Rupert
finally puts one together and he muscles his way into the 16 car field.
De Joria has the car shake hard again and he is coasting for most of her
run. Even worse for that team O'Bannon is out of the program as well. At
least he's still in line to run. Left Lane: Rian Konno Runs 7.397/128.86, Now #20
Best prior run: 7.909/240.00, Was #20
Right Lane: Dan Dickey Runs 9.554/92.59, Now #22
Best prior run: 10.324/82.59, Was #22 Dickey
has had his racer turn right on him on his first two runs. Here in the
final round of qualifying of course the car turns left and tries to
cross the centerline. Konno had the same problem in the other lane
except his racer headed for the concrete. He lifted as well. Left Lane: Russ Parker Runs 6.070/247.79, Now #19
Best prior run: 6.157/218.87, Was #19
Right Lane: Paul Anderson Runs 5.634/255.05, Now #4
Best prior run: 5.863/249.49, Was #18 Anderson
goes from outside all the way to the #4 spot. Really good looking run
for he and his team. Parker actually puffed the tires in the 1-2 shift
and the car never really recovered. Left Lane: Sean O'Bannon Runs 5.799/257.63, Now #16
Best prior run: 5.856/256.55, Was #18
Right Lane: Mark Woznichak Runs 5.890/248.80, Now #17
Best prior run: 5.825/248.89, Was #16 O'Bannon
was completely off the pedal at 100ft and he still manages to put the
car in the show...on the bump. Woz just misses in the other lane. Left Lane: S. Gasparrelli Runs 8.822/102.12, Now #18
Best prior run: 5.837/250.00, Was #18
Right Lane: Ron August Jr Runs 6.223/180.16, Now #14
Best prior run: 5.775/252.71, Was #14 Gasparrelli
left and headed straight for the center line. He has to lift and he's
not going to play in the first round. August got further down range but
his Camaro moved over to the concrete wall and he had to lift as well. I
believe that puts O'Bannon in the show for good as Gasparrelli was that
last car that could bump him. Left Lane: Bret Williamson Runs 15.985/54.71, Now #13
Best prior run: 5.770/242.80, Was #13
Right Lane: B. Harrington Runs 5.809/245.49, Now #12
Best prior run: 5.761/246.21, Was #12 Williamson
swapped feet and blew the tires off instantly. He remains #13.
Harrington's Camaro sounded odd in the lights but the speed is in line
with all the rest of his runs. Left Lane: John Patton Runs 5.775/252.00, Now #10
Best prior run: 5.727/234.57, Was #10
Right Lane: Jeff Carroll Runs 11.431/80.50, Now #11
Best prior run: 5.749/249.58, Was #11 Patton
gets a full pass but remains in his original spot in the field. Carroll
kicks the tires loose so he's one spot behind Patton. Left Lane: Dennis Taylor Runs 5.802/228.19, Now #8
Best prior run: 5.697/252.57, Was #8
Right Lane: Clint Thompson Runs 5.724/251.25, Now #9
Best prior run: 5.712/250.88, Was #9 Both
drivers go quicker but they remain in the same spots in the field.
Steady progress for both teams. Left Lane: Doug Gordon Runs 5.646/259.41, Now #5
Best prior run: 5.665/258.62, Was #6
Right Lane: Don Hudson Runs 5.967/228.27, Now #7
Best prior run: 5.678/251.72, Was #7 Gordon
actually picks up his pace and moves up one spot. Hudson looked pretty
good until about 1100ft where the engine turned a bit unhappy. Left Lane: Jay Payne Runs 5.592/258.81, Now #2
Best prior run: 5.634/257.24, Was #3
Right Lane: Sean Bellemeur Runs 5.687/249.26, Now #6
Best prior run: 5.647/254.90, Was #6 Payne
goes around Hough on the list but he still can't catch Manzo. Bellemeur
slows from the early session today. Left Lane: Brian Hough Runs 5.658/256.99, Now #3
Best prior run: 5.617/255.29, Was #3
Right Lane: Frank Manzo Runs 6.075/179.90, Now #1
Best prior run: 5.540/262.23, Was #1 The
final pair of qualifiers are on the line. Hough falls a little short
after crossing the centerline on his earlier run today. Manzo had the
car bouncing around pretty good at the top end and wound up shutting off
very early. He will remain the #1 qualifier and I'm pretty sure he's
ready for Round 1.

Round 1 |
POMONA, Calif. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 1
eliminations in Top Alcohol Funny Car at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing
Series, 48th annual CARQUEST Auto Parts Winternationals: W/L Driver R-Time E-Time Speed
(W) Frank Manzo (Lucas Oil Monte Carlo) 0.031 5.538 262.23
(L) Sean O'Bannon (Tequila Patron Charger) 0.058 5.704 256.50
1:44 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 77 degrees, relative
humidity 18 percent, barometer 28.94 inches, adjusted altitude 2,676
feet, track temperature 102 degrees.
O'Bannon has said that if his kid beats Manzo he'll get a mohawk
haircut just like one of the kids on the team. Manzo has two wins here
and one runner-up at this event. He's been to the semis in the last
three times he's been here. (W) Paul Anderson (Denver Steaks.com Charger) 0.144 5.648 254.18
(L) Bret Williamson (Team Eagle Corvette) 0.065 6.523 161.75
Anderson is the Div-5 champ from last season and one of the
youngest ever. Also he was last season's Rookie of the Year in his
division. Williamson was runner-up here in 1989 and 2001. Today
Williamson boomed the blower and sent the burst panel high into the hazy
sky. Anderson was a winner, despite the light. (W) Jay Payne (Thunderslug/Valvoline Mustang) 0.172 5.587 257.48
(L) Jason Rupert (Rupert Racing Firebird) 0.000 5.838 251.53
Payne has 392 round wins coming into this event and now it's 393.
Rupert didn't go quietly as he threw a perfect light on the board in his
lane. Still not much help. Jay Payne's MOV: 0.0797 seconds
(approximately 29 feet). (W) Brian Hough (Brian Hough Racing Monte Carlo 0.073 6.935 158.65
(L) Ron August Jr (California Air Camaro) -0.085(R) 8.403 112.70
August was all over the lane even after the redlight. I think he
finally noticed that the win light was on and he finally backed off.
Hough shook the tires hard but he certainly noticed the win light
sooner. That makes 102 national event round wins for Hough as well. (W) Doug Gordon (Morro Bay Cabinets Monte Carlo -0.006 5.620 259.71
(L) Bernie Harrington (Lucas Oil Firebird) -0.138(R) 5.828 247.34
Gordon won this event in 2003 and he takes the first step towards
repeating here. Both drivers were red but Harrington was a ton red
compared to Gordon's -.006. He has lane choice over Anderson on Sunday. (W) Jeff Carroll (Hice Cellars Monte Carlo) 0.061 6.707 204.08
(L) Sean Bellemeur (Meer Homes Inc Camaro) -0.015(R) 5.664 248.98
Carroll takes advantage of the unusual redlight from Bellemeur.
Strangely enough his 6.707 is good enough for lane choice over Hough. (W) John Patton (Foolish Money Firebird) 0.096 5.770 224.81
(L) Don Hudson (Red Line Oil/Vasser Chevrolet C 0.070 8.901 98.90
Hudson took a slight lead at the hit but he shook the tires and
short shifted. It really turned ugly for him when there was a very loud
boom from the erupting burst panel. Payne with choice over Hudson when
they meet. (W) Dennis Taylor (Plumbing Concepts Camaro) 0.088 5.768 251.39
(L) Clint Thompson (Monte Carlo) -9.999(R) NT-Broke After Staging
Thompson had some kind of problem and it took him forever to
stage. He finally got the car into the beams after Taylor must have sat
in th car with the engine up on high 'C' for about 20-30 seconds!
Finally the tree came down and Thompson never even moved. The short
version is a round win for Taylor and a meeting on Sunday with Manzo.
Sorry Dennis. No lane choice for you!

Round 2 |
POMONA, Calif. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 2
eliminations in Top Alcohol Funny Car at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing
Series, 48th annual CARQUEST Auto Parts Winternationals: W/L Driver R-Time E-Time Speed
(W) Brian Hough (Brian Hough Racing Monte Carlo 0.014 6.743 175.91
(L) Jeff Carroll (Hice Cellars Monte Carlo) 0.046 6.865 244.56
12:50 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 80 degrees,
relative humidity 19 percent, barometer 28.94 inches, adjusted altitude
2,874 feet, track temperature 98 degrees.
It's beginning to warm up pretty good but high clouds and haze are
keeping the track a little cooler than I would expect. This was ugly for
both these drivers. Hough left first and squared the tires then he was
followed by Carroll doing the same. Carroll shook so hard there were
parts falling off. The win finally goes to Hough. (W) Doug Gordon (Morro Bay Cabinets Monte Carlo 0.056 5.652 257.83
(L) Paul Anderson (Denver Steaks.com Charger) 0.075 DQ-Centerline
Anderson shook so hard in the right lane that he wiped out the
330ft marker by crossing to the left. His 13.281/62.53 will be erased.
Gordon moves to the semi-finals. (W) Jay Payne (Thunderslug/Valvoline Mustang) 0.059 5.608 257.09
(L) John Patton (Foolish Money Firebird) 0.065 5.754 231.44
Payne was behind right from the get go. His car refused to fire
and a crew person actually rewired the ignition while Patton did his
burnout. Payne hurried his program as much as he could and after they
both backed to the starting it was Payne the lighted the first light.
From there it was Payne from start to finish. He has choice over Hough. (W) Frank Manzo (Lucas Oil Monte Carlo) 0.072 5.509 262.69
(L) Dennis Taylor (Plumbing Concepts Camaro) 0.125 10.868 63.19
Taylor had problems right at the start and he winds up late on the
tree. The car doesn't respond at the hit and Manzo just runs away with
the round. He has lane choice over Gordon in the semis.

eliminations in Top Alcohol Funny Car at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing

(L) Jay Payne (Thunderslug/Valvoline Mustang) 0.030 5.858 252.95
2:47 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 81 degrees, relative
humidity 17 percent, barometer 28.93 inches, adjusted altitude 2,924
feet, track temperature 98 degrees.
Just a little bit of an upset here. I mean little as Hough qualified
#2 to Payne's #2. Even at the hit, Hough pulled away for the win at the
top end. (W) Frank Manzo (Lucas Oil Monte Carlo) 0.050 5.560 259.96
(L) Doug Gordon (Morro Bay Cabinets Monte Carlo 0.025 5.651 258.86
No question here of an upset. Gordon does his job and leaves on
Manzo The Master, but from there the car took over and that was the end
of the weekend for him. Manzo has choice over Hough in the final.

POMONA, Calif. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of final, round 4
eliminations in Top Alcohol Funny Car at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing
Series, 48th annual CARQUEST Auto Parts Winternationals: W/L Driver R-Time E-Time Speed
(W) Frank Manzo (Lucas Oil Monte Carlo) 0.016 5.558 260.26
(L) Brian Hough (Brian Hough Racing Monte Carlo 0.043 5.779 250.27
4:38 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 80 degrees, relative
humidity 21 percent, barometer 28.90 inches, adjusted altitude 2,931
feet, track temperature 87 degrees.
Manzo is 2-0 against Hough overall and that includes 1-0 in Finals.
Manzo has won this event in 1997 and 2005 and this is actually a rematch
of that 2005 final. This is Hough's 11th final and he's currently 5-5.
Well, now he's 5-6. Manzo has pretty much lived in the 5.5s this weekend
and he's done it again.
