Results for Qualifying Round 1
JOLIET, Ill. - CHICAGO 1 - Notes from round 1 qualifying in
Funny Car at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, Sixth annual Lucas
Oil NHRA Route 66 Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top
speed, and position in order following run:
Right Lane: Arnie Karp Runs 5.026/296.18, Now #1
5:00 PM Karp is making his first NHRA event pass in a Fuel Funny Car. He was a little loose for the first 300 feet.
Left Lane: John Lawson Runs 4.909/311.99, Now #1
Right Lane: Keith Jackson Runs 5.805/176.05, Now #3
Jackson was off the throttle before the 1000-foot mark. Lawson makes his first pass of this season a pretty good one.
Left Lane: Bob Bode Runs 5.495/190.92, Now #4
Right Lane: Jack Wyatt Runs 5.011/266.11, Now #2
Bode was mixing up the cylinders on the top half of the track while Wyatt was spitting out engine parts at the finish.
Left Lane: Dale Creasy Jr. Runs 15.192/70.51, Now #6
Right Lane: Scotty Cannon No Time, Now #7
Cannon banged the blower on the hit, the car rolling to a stop at about 100 feet. Creasy got sideways immediately and he hit the retaining wall pretty hard while attempting to straighten it out. He did idle down the track so the Craftsman team should be able to repair the damage.
Left Lane: Bob Gilbertson Runs 5.004/286.56, Now #2
Right Lane: Dean Skuza Runs 9.031/91.51, Now #7
Skuza lost traction at 300 feet, the car fishtailing as he tried to drive through it, and he finally had to lift.
Left Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 4.849/314.46, Now #1
Right Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 4.937/305.70, Now #3
Pedregon was mixing up the cylinders a little bit near the finish, but otherwise this was a good looking pass for both drivers.
Left Lane: Frank Pedregon Runs 6.119/148.25, Now #9
Right Lane: Gary Scelzi Runs 10.686/84.29, Now #11
Scelzi struck the tires at about 300 feet with Pedregon doing the same at half track.
Left Lane: John Force Runs 4.763/322.81, Now #1
Right Lane: Tommy Johnson Jr.Runs 8.968/118.27, Now #11
Johnson was up in smoke at around 200 feet. No problems for Force on this pass, this is his lowest elapsed time of this season.
Left Lane: Johnny Gray Runs 4.912/302.48, Now #4
Right Lane: Ron Capps Runs 5.639/172.65, Now #10
Capps was off the throttle at about 1000 feet, the reason not apparent from here. Gray's engine let go on him just before the finish line. The car was on fire as he brought it to a stop, but he was able to get out of the car without getting hurt. I can't say the same for the car's body.
Left Lane: Del Worsham Runs 4.910/311.34, Now #5
Right Lane: Gary Densham Runs 4.866/315.34, Now #3
Both drivers kept the candles lit and the cars in the groove, a good looking drag race.
Left Lane: Whit Bazemore Runs 4.839/321.96, Now #3
Right Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 4.798/320.81, Now #2
Another good looking pair to close out the round. John Force is in the top spot while Frank Pedregon is on the bump.

5:09 PM Current weather conditions: 56 degrees, 59 percent relative humidity, the barometer 29.99 inches, with a track temperature of 82 degrees.

This was Jackson's first ever 4-second run and he still falls short of making the field. I couldn't see any problems with Creasy's car.
Left Lane: Frank Pedregon Runs 4.855/315.34, Now #11
Best prior run: 6.119/148.25, Was #21

Left Lane: Johnny Gray Runs 4.880/307.72, Now #15
Best prior run: 4.912/302.48, Was #15

Both drivers step it up a notch, and just in time. Pedregon is safely in the field, but Gray has to wait and see what Lawson and Karp do before he knows if he'll be racing on Sunday. This was Pedregon's quickest run of this season.
Left Lane: John Lawson Runs 8.588/113.69, Now #16
Best prior run: 4.909/311.99, Was #16

Lawson smoked the tires at about 200 feet. He stayed on the throttle but couldn't get the tires to hook up. Karp was on a good looking pass until he lost the blower belt at about 1000 feet.

Best prior run: 4.849/314.46, Was #11
Right Lane: Ron Capps Runs 4.819/321.35, Now #6

Wilkerson's engine went silent at about 1200 feet. Capps produces a season best elapsed time and a career best speed on this pass.
Left Lane: Del Worsham Runs 4.776/318.47, Now #4
Best prior run: 4.838/314.53, Was #9

Worsham was mixing up the cylinders from 1000 feet through the finish. The pass is still quick enough to be a career best elapsed time. Densham was glued to him all the way down the track, making for a great looking drag race.
Left Lane: Bob Bode Runs 9.697/81.20, Now #9

Results for Elimination Round 1
JOLIET, Ill. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 1
eliminations in Funny Car at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, Sixth
annual Lucas Oil NHRA Route 66 Nationals:
 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Ron Capps (Skoal Racing Camaro) 0.071 4.753 322.96
 (L) Bob Bode (Promotorsports\Arbee Firebird) 0.149 4.947 300.60
11:31 AM Current weather conditions: 60 degrees, 43 percent relative humidity, the barometer 30.13 inches, with a track temperature of 86 degrees.

These two drivers have faced each other in eliminations only once in the past, Capps winning that one. Capps won the CSK NHRA Nationals at Firebird Raceway in Phoenix earlier this year, did so from the 9th qualifying spot.

The Safety Safari did some work on the right lane at the starting line after the Top Fuel cars were finished running.

Bode was moving around his lane, but he gave it all he had. Capps has a flawless pass to move into the second round.

 (W) Del Worsham (Checker Schuck's Kragen Firebir0.079 4.791 321.27
 (L) Frank Pedregon (K&N Filters Firebird) 0.075 4.853 315.12
This is the first meeting in eliminations between these to drivers this season. They have faced each other 13 times in the past, Worsham having a 9-4 edge over Pedregon.

Both drivers keep the candles lit all the way down the track. This was a very good run for Pedregon, but Worsham's was even better. Del Worsham's MOV: 0.0584 seconds (approximately 27 feet).

 (W) John Lawson (Lawson Racing Firebird) 0.078 4.926 289.94
 (L) John Force (Castrol GTX Mustang) 0.075 5.005 297.42
This is the fourth time in six years that John Force has put the Castrol GTX Ford on the "pole" at the Lucas Oil Nationals. On each previous occasion he reached the final round but won only in 2000 when he beat Jerry Toliver for an 86th victory that broke Bob Glidden's career record.

This is the 114th time in his career that John has started an NHRA national event from the No. 1 qualifying position, and the 310th consecutive NHRA national event for which he has qualified.

Force and Lawson have faced each other four times in eliminations, Force winning all four.

Force dropped a cylinder at half track and the rear end of the car began to move around on him, allowing Lawson to take the upset win.

 (W) Tony Pedregon (Castrol Syntec Mustang) 0.077 4.785 311.49
 (L) Johnny Gray (Checker Schuck's Kragen Firebir0.073 17.210 No
Speed
Pedregon is seeking his second straight victory at Route 66 Raceway but his first in the Lucas Oil Nationals. He won last fall's Route 66 Nationals.

Tony enters eliminations as the NHRA POWERade points leader. He hasn't lost a first round race since last June when he was beaten in St. Louis by teammate John Force. That's 20 straight races without a first round loss, the longest active streak in the sport.

Pedregon has beaten Gray both times they've faced each other in eliminations this season and has a 10-1 overall career advantage.

Gray blew the burst panel at about 300 feet and the entire Funny Car body followed it high into the air. The chutes deployed automatically and Gray brought the car safely to a stop.

 (W) Gary Densham (AAA of So. Cal. Mustang) 0.095 4.803 321.04
 (L) Scotty Cannon (Oakley Firebird) 0.103 4.975 303.71
Gary Densham has won just two elimination rounds in seven appearances at Route 66 Raceway. This is the first time this season these two drivers have faced each other in eliminations. They have faced off 9 times in the past with Cannon having a 5-4 edge.

Cannon lost a cylinder or two at half track. He picked them back up, but by then Densham was too far ahead.

 (W) Whit Bazemore (Matco Tools Stratus) 0.080 4.789 322.42
 (L) Bob Gilbertson (O'Reilly Auto Parts Camaro) 0.082 4.839 288.21
Bazemore beat Gilbertson in the first round in Topeka, their only encounter of this season. Bazemore holds a 5-1 overall advantage over Gilbertson in career face offs.

This was a good looking drag race, Bazemore pulling away on the top half of the track. Whit Bazemore's incremental margins (negative if behind): 60ft(-0.025), 330 ft(-0.008), 660ft(0.007), 1,000ft(0.018). MOV: 0.0529 seconds (approximately 22 feet).

 (W) Gary Scelzi (Oakley Stratus) 0.082 4.795 328.06
 (L) Tim Wilkerson (Levi, Ray & Shoup Firebird) 0.068 4.825 313.29
This is the first meeting between these two drivers in eliminations this season. They have met once in the past, Scelzi winning that time. Scelzi ran a blistering 327.98 miles-per-hour in qualifying this weekend. If he can run within one percent of that mark today, it will be an official speed record for the NHRA Funny Car class.

Another good looking drag race! Gary Scelzi's MOV: 0.0163 seconds (approximately 7 feet).

Scelzi not only backed up his earlier top speed, he topped it! 328.06 is now the NHRA Funny Car speed record.

 (W) Tommy Johnson Jr. (Skoal Racing Camaro) 0.087 5.526 229.08
 (L) Cruz Pedregon (Advance Auto Parts Firebird) 0.062 5.792 214.86
Pedregon beat Johnson in the first round in Topeka, their only meeting in eliminations this season. They have faced each other a total of five times with TJ having won three of those.

Both drivers struck the tires just past the 330-foot cones. Both drivers pedaled their cars, Pedregon less successfully than Johnson. Pedregon got out of shape and nearly crossed the centerline at the top end.

Second round pairings, driver with lane choice listed first: Capps vs Lawson; Bazemore vs Worsham; Tony Pedregon vs Johnson; Scelzi vs Densham.

 (W) John Lawson (Lawson Racing Firebird) 0.092 4.972 290.94
 (L) Ron Capps (Skoal Racing Camaro) 0.078 6.482 150.41
1:34 PM Current weather conditions: 64 degrees, 35 percent relative humidity, the barometer 30.10 inches, with a track temperature of 96 degrees.

Capps and Lawson have met twice in eliminations, Capps winning both times.

Capps lost traction at about 200 feet. He tried to pedal it several times, and in the process overloaded the engine and blew it up. Lawson had won a total of four rounds of NHRA Funny Car competition prior to today.

 (W) Whit Bazemore (Matco Tools Stratus) 0.063 4.970 297.22
 (L) Del Worsham (Checker Schuck's Kragen Firebir0.098 6.169 154.03
2:06 PM Bazemore and Worsham have met 34 times in eliminations, each have won 17 times. After the Safety Safari did a lengthy clean up on the left lane, Bazemore decided to take the right lane instead of the left.

Worsham lost traction at about 400 feet and he lifted. Bazemore will have lane choice over Lawson in round three.

 (W) Tommy Johnson Jr. (Skoal Racing Camaro) 0.151 5.105 264.29
 (L) Tony Pedregon (Castrol Syntec Mustang) 0.075 5.520 196.99
Pedregon and Johnson have met 10 times in eliminations, each have won 5 times.

Pedregon smoked the tires just before half track. He pedaled it several times before giving up on the run. Johnson was dropping cylinders on the top half, a small fire burning under the car body as he came to a stop in the shutdown area. Johnson left some oil on the track so we are down for track clean-up again.

 (W) Gary Densham (AAA of So. Cal. Mustang) 0.089 5.495 235.68
 (L) Gary Scelzi (Oakley Stratus) 0.099 5.640 214.25
2:19 PM Scelzi and Densham have met twice in eliminations, both times were this season and both times Densham won.

The last time the NHRA Funny Car speed record was set by a Dodge was in 1991 at Pomona by Jim White at 291.82 mph.

This started out as a clean run for both drivers. They both lost traction at half track and it turned into a pedal-fest, Densham having greater success at getting the tires hooked up than Scelzi.

Densham will give lane choice to Johnson in round three.

3:45 PM Current weather conditions: 68 degrees, 30 percent relative humidity, the barometer 30.09 inches, with a track temperature of 103 degrees.

Densham and Johnson have met once this season, Densham getting the win light. They have faced off ten times overall, each driver winning five times.

Densham had traction troubles at about 800 feet and the car moved to the left of the groove. Johnson left a little oil at the finish line.

 (W) Whit Bazemore (Matco Tools Stratus) 0.088 5.024 289.01
 (L) John Lawson (Lawson Racing Firebird) 0.064 6.368 167.30
3:58 PM Lawson and Bazemore have faced each other one time in eliminations. It was in St. Louis, last year, and Lawson won.

Lawson moved toward the centerline right after the launch then smoked the tires at about 200 feet. Bazemore was hazing the tires at the top end and that will cost him lane choice in the final round.
