Results for Qualifying Round 1
POMONA, Calif. - POMONA 2 - Notes from round 1 qualifying in
Pro Stock Motorcycle at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 42nd
annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals listing lane,
rider name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following
        run:
Right Lane: Freddie Camarena Runs 7.250/182.82, Now #1
1:21 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 75 degrees, relative humidity 43 percent, barometer 29.04 inches, adjusted altitude 2,372 feet, track temperature 99 degrees.

It's been very warn here in Southern California over the last week and the temperature is started to come up as the fog burns off. Camarena opens the party with a 7.250 right out of the box.

Right Lane: Connie Cohen No Time, Now #3
Cohen runs 7.414/172.19 but she started the clocks with the rear wheel. The time is thrown out and she'll be back for round two on Friday.
Left Lane: Mike Berry Runs 7.118/186.95, Now #1
Right Lane: Chris Rivas Runs 7.236/180.77, Now #2
Berry steps up early in the rotation but does land a really good looking run. Rivas trails with his 7.23.
Left Lane: Marco Andreano Runs 7.162/181.98, Now #3
Right Lane: Steve Johnson Runs 7.109/187.08, Now #1
Andreano drifted over towards the center all the way to half track. After that he hauled the bike back to the middle for a mid teen pass. Johnson goes right to the head of the class. That's going to change fast I'm sure.
Left Lane: Shawn Gann Runs 7.179/185.05, Now #5
Right Lane: Michael Phillips Runs 7.094/190.11, Now #1

Left Lane: Craig Treble Runs 7.059/189.84, Now #1
Right Lane: Matt Guidera Runs 7.087/185.59, Now #2
Treble and Guidera rock the field with a pair of stout runs. Both riders have had tough years and a win for either team here would be big.
Left Lane: GT Tonglet Runs 7.107/185.61, Now #4
Right Lane: Tom Bradford Runs 7.142/188.62, Now #7
Tonglet's numbers looked good on the low end of the track but the bike appeared to fall off just a bit from half track on. Bradford is in for the moment.
Left Lane: Geno Scali Runs 7.108/186.51, Now #6
Right Lane: Ryan Schnitz Runs 7.099/185.59, Now #4
Things are tightening up now.
Left Lane: Karen Stoffer Runs 7.133/184.47, Now #9
Right Lane: Matt Smith Runs 7.194/181.42, Now #13
Treble's run is looking better and better.
Left Lane: Chip Ellis Runs 7.081/183.10, Now #3
Right Lane: Angelle Sampey Runs 7.066/188.07, Now #2
Sampey is the first of the Army bikes to hit the starting line today. She still has an outside chance at the championship but would need a lot of help from others to take the title. She just misses Treble's time and holds down the #2 spot at the moment. Ellis slides into #3 on his Buell.
Left Lane: Antron Brown Runs 7.106/184.70, Now #8
Right Lane: Andrew Hines Runs 7.020/191.00, Now #1
The two title hopefuls meet here in qualifying. Hines has a 37 point lead over Brown coming into the event. he certainly makes a statement here as he trumps the field and just misses a six second pass. Brown is in but barely makes the top half of the field. That closes out the first session of a tightly contested class.

Pro Stock Motorcycle at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 42nd
annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals listing lane,
rider name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order
following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order
        prior to run:

1:20 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 75 degrees, relative humidity 33 percent, barometer 29.12 inches, adjusted altitude 2,171 feet, track temperature 104 degrees.

We've arrived at the Friday Pro qualifying session and as usual it's the Bikes up first. Cohen rolled the lights yesterday and got a rear wheel start. It's something to tune from but not quick enough to qualify.

Left Lane: Freddie Camarena Runs 7.235/181.45, Now #19
Best prior run: 7.250/182.82, Was #19
Right Lane: Scott Lewis Runs 7.149/181.01, Now #15
                                  No Prior Run
Lewis bumps Gann and moves to a very unsafe #15 position. No help for Camarena.
Left Lane: Chris Rivas Runs 7.714/130.47, Now #20
Best prior run: 7.236/180.77, Was #20

Gann gets right back in the show in a huge way. He runs a 7.0 in conditions that are not quite as good as Thursday. Rivas still has work.
Left Lane: Matt Smith Runs 7.226/174.23, Now #18
Best prior run: 7.194/181.42, Was #18
Right Lane: Marco Andreano Runs 7.242/182.30, Now #17
Best prior run: 7.162/181.98, Was #17
Real surprise here as neither rider can improve. Gann's run looks really good at the moment.
Left Lane: Tom Bradford Runs 7.265/180.57, Now #15
Best prior run: 7.142/188.62, Was #15

No help for this pair of riders either.
Left Lane: Steve Johnson Runs 7.185/180.33, Now #12
Best prior run: 7.109/187.08, Was #12
Right Lane: Mike Berry No Time, Now #13
Best prior run: 7.118/186.95, Was #13
Again neither rider improves. Berry started the clocks with the rear wheel so his 8.205/108.09 will be DQd.
Left Lane: Ryan Schnitz Runs 7.124/182.87, Now #8
Best prior run: 7.099/185.59, Was #8

Best prior run: 7.108/186.51, Was #11
Another pair that just can't muster the suds and improve in the heat of the day.
Left Lane: Michael Phillips Runs 7.158/184.35, Now #7
Best prior run: 7.094/190.11, Was #7
Right Lane: GT Tonglet Runs 7.163/186.54, Now #10
Best prior run: 7.107/185.61, Was #10
Both riders are about a nickel short from Thursday.
Left Lane: Matt Guidera Runs 7.100/184.40, Now #6
Best prior run: 7.087/185.59, Was #6

Best prior run: 7.106/184.70, Was #9
Same story for this pair. It's more of the same.
Left Lane: Angelle Sampey Runs 7.113/182.35, Now #3

Left Lane: Andrew Hines Runs 7.020/190.27, Now #1
Best prior run: 7.020/191.00, Was #1

Best prior run: 7.059/189.84, Was #2
Gann had the run of the session up until the final pair here with Hines. Hines absolutely duplicates his Thursday run but loses about 1 mph. We close with Hines #1 and Lewis on the bump. The Championship competitors, Brown and Sampey , are #9 and #3 respectively. On to Pro Stock Automobiles.

POMONA, Calif. - POMONA 2 - Notes from round 3 qualifying in
Pro Stock Motorcycle at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 42nd
annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals listing lane,
rider name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order
following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order
        prior to run:
Right Lane: Chris Rivas Runs 7.171/182.87, Now #18
Best prior run: 7.236/180.77, Was #20
11:45 a.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 73 degrees, relative humidity 45 percent, barometer 29.12 inches, adjusted altitude 2,080 feet, track temperature 89 degrees.

Rivas runs his best of the weekend but still can't quite crack the field. Right now the bump is Scott Lewis at 7.149.

Left Lane: Mike Berry No Time, Now #13
Best prior run: 7.118/186.95, Was #13
Right Lane: Connie Cohen No Time, Now #21
Best prior run: 7.426/168.98, Was #21
Berry appeared to break a throttle cable when they started the bike and he's pushed away. Cohen had her hands full with the Buell and she actually crossed the center line and took out the 660 marker.
Left Lane: Marco Andreano Runs 7.224/181.64, Now #17
Best prior run: 7.162/181.98, Was #17
Right Lane: Tom Bradford Runs 7.303/179.88, Now #15
Best prior run: 7.142/188.62, Was #15
Both riders get no help. Bradford remains #15.
Left Lane: Karen Stoffer Runs 7.150/184.62, Now #14
Best prior run: 7.133/184.47, Was #14
Right Lane: Freddie Camarena Runs 7.272/184.35, Now #20
Best prior run: 7.235/181.45, Was #20
Stoffer doesn't improve, nor does Camarena.
Left Lane: GT Tonglet Runs 7.122/186.23, Now #10
Best prior run: 7.107/185.61, Was #10
Right Lane: Matt Smith Runs 7.131/180.91, Now #14
Best prior run: 7.194/181.42, Was #19
I'm surprised at the times so far in this session as the air is cool and the track is under complete cloud cover. Tonglet slows but Smith bumps Lewis.
Left Lane: Scott Lewis Runs 7.170/184.37, Now #17
Best prior run: 7.149/181.01, Was #17
Right Lane: Steve Johnson Runs 7.115/187.44, Now #12
Best prior run: 7.109/187.08, Was #12
Lewis tried to bump his way back in and oust Bradford. Not this time. He's down to his final shot this afternoon. Johnson runs well but slows from his best.
Left Lane: Antron Brown Runs 7.128/184.25, Now #9
Best prior run: 7.106/184.70, Was #9
Right Lane: Michael Phillips Runs 7.131/187.96, Now #7
Best prior run: 7.094/190.11, Was #7
With Hines #1 and Brown #9 Hines is actually more than two rounds behind at the moment. After the runs both riders remain exactly the same.
Left Lane: Geno Scali Runs 7.102/188.70, Now #9
Best prior run: 7.108/186.51, Was #11
Right Lane: Ryan Schnitz Runs 7.088/186.38, Now #7
Best prior run: 7.099/185.59, Was #8
That run by Scali puts Brown down a spot and puts Hines on the other side of the ladder. Not what Brown wants. Schnitz picks up a spot with the best run of the session.
Left Lane: Chip Ellis Runs 7.124/183.72, Now #5
Best prior run: 7.081/183.10, Was #5
Right Lane: Angelle Sampey Runs 7.135/184.93, Now #3
Best prior run: 7.066/188.07, Was #3
Much slower for both riders on this hit.
Left Lane: Shawn Gann No Time, Now #4
Best prior run: 7.081/188.28, Was #4
Right Lane: Matt Guidera Runs 7.081/185.51, Now #5
Best prior run: 7.087/185.59, Was #6
Gann is pushed back and there was no apparent reason. Guidera picks up a spot on speed.
Left Lane: Craig Treble Runs 7.071/189.90, Now #2

New low for the session comes from Treble. Hines has to stand on his earlier times as he sit up early on this one. That's the final bikes of the session.

Schnitz has the best run of the session to this point and Scali is right behind.
Left Lane: Matt Guidera Runs 7.086/184.60, Now #5
Best prior run: 7.081/185.51, Was #5

Gann really tiptoed down the center line but doesn't cross. Sampey with a good run as well.
Left Lane: Andrew Hines Runs 7.054/188.86, Now #1
Best prior run: 7.020/191.00, Was #1

Best prior run: 7.046/190.35, Was #2
Great side by side race here. If this had been sunday I might want Treble in the office pool. That ends the final qualifying session of the season for the bikes.

Results for Elimination Round 1
POMONA, Calif. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 1
eliminations in Pro Stock Motorcycle at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing
Series, 42nd annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals:
 W/L Driver R-Time E-Time Speed

 (W) Geno Scali (Performance Machine Suzuki) 0.006 7.123 188.91
 (L) Michael Phillips (Phillips Racing Suzuki) 0.030 7.136 185.79
12:16 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 74 degrees, relative humidity 42 percent, barometer 29.20 inches, adjusted altitude 2,049 feet, track temperature 91 degrees.

Phillips is 4-3 against Scali. Scali on the other hand is 119-129 for his long career. Great light for Scali and then he proceeds to outrun him as well.

 (W) Antron Brown (US Army Suzuki) 0.039 7.152 184.90
 (L) Ryan Schnitz (Team Muzzy Buell) -0.007(R) 7.057 187.05
Schnitz won this event in 2005n but is in tough here in round 1. Brown won here in 1999 and this is only the 24th time in his long career that he's been in the bottom half of the field. In his 129th event he has a chance to catch Hines but his fate is not in his own hands. He pretty much needs Hines out in the first round and then for him to win the event. Schnitz throws his run away on the tree and Brown's hopes are still alive.
 (W) Matt Guidera (Rocklin Motorsports Buell) 0.103 7.048 186.54
 (L) Steve Johnson (Snap-On Tools Suzuki) 0.082 7.154 189.31
Guidera holds a 14-20 lifetime record as a Pro Stock Motorcycle rider. He is also the 71st different rider that Johnson has faced in his career. This is Johnson's best start in 38 races. Guidera just has way to much for Johnson this time.
 (W) Matt Smith (Torco/Skull Gear Buell) 0.027 7.103 182.92
 (L) Angelle Sampey (US Army Suzuki) 0.083 7.087 187.81
This was a bit of a surprise to me when the numbers were compiled but this is Sampey's 150th straight qualified event. This is Smith's 41st start and 19 of them have been from the top half of the field. Sampey was to careful on the light and winds up getting beat.
 (W) GT Tonglet (Screamin' Eagle/Vance & Hines H 0.012 7.104 186.92
 (L) Chip Ellis (Drag Specialties/G2 Buell) -0.017(R) 7.144 185.31
Ellis's 34th start produces his 32nd top half qualifying result. This is the 71st time Tonglet has qualified for on of these events. Ellis throws the first round away on the tree and Tonglet gets the gift. Smith has choice over Tonglet by .001.
 (W) Shawn Gann (Race girl/ Lucas Oil Suzuki) 0.011 7.097 185.77
 (L) Mike Berry (Lucas Cycles Suzuki) 0.050 7.150 187.36
This is Gann's 99th event and he's a perfect 4-0 against Berry. This is the 10th time Berry has qualified #10. Gann with the light and a better pass. Guidera has lane choice over Gann.
 (W) Craig Treble (Team Tigue Suzuki) 0.005 7.036 191.70
 (L) Karen Stoffer (GEICO Motorcycle Suzuki) 0.044 7.068 187.57
Stoffer is qualified for her 65th event and has a career record of 4-4 vs Treble. Treble nails Stoffer to the tree and the runs his best pass of the weekend. That was top speed for the bikes as well.
 (W) Tom Bradford (Hal's Speed Shop Buell) 0.007 7.075 188.04
 (L) Andrew Hines (Screamin' Eagle/Vance & Hines -0.019(R) 7.028 187.16
Hines and Bradford meet here in round one with a championship riding on the outcome of this event. This is the 19th time in Hines career that he's qualified #1. He's 3-0 against Bradford. Oh my! Hines leaves the door wide open for Brown by turning on the redlight here in the first round. Bradford will have lane choice over Scali.

1:56 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 72 degrees, relative humidity 36 percent, barometer 29.19 inches, adjusted altitude 1,931 feet, track temperature 95 degrees.

Pretty even at the start but Smith pulls away.

 (W) Tom Bradford (Hal's Speed Shop Buell) 0.022 8.018 184.47
 (L) Geno Scali (Performance Machine Suzuki) -0.022(R) 7.139 188.46
Hide sharp objects from Scali. He goes red and Bradford has bike problems.
 (W) Matt Guidera (Rocklin Motorsports Buell) 0.045 7.048 187.05
 (L) Shawn Gann (Race girl/ Lucas Oil Suzuki) -0.017(R) 7.030 190.24
This pair it's Gann that turns the red bulb on. Guidera with choice over Bradford in the semis.
 (W) Craig Treble (Team Tigue Suzuki) 0.005 7.060 191.95
 (L) Antron Brown (US Army Suzuki) 0.084 7.149 184.60
Treble throws a huge light at Brown and Hines is the 2006 Pro Stock Motorcycle championship. Treble also secured lane choice when he meets Smith in the other semi.

 (L) Matt Smith (Torco/Skull Gear Buell) 0.020 7.221 180.84
3:28 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 73 degrees, relative humidity 34 percent, barometer 29.16 inches, adjusted altitude 2,024 feet, track temperature 94 degrees.

It almost sounded like Smith had problems getting the Buell to shift. By the time he recovered Treble was waiting for the final round.

 (W) Tom Bradford (Hal's Speed Shop Buell) 0.074 7.112 185.64
 (L) Matt Guidera (Rocklin Motorsports Buell) 0.119 7.076 186.00
Neither driver is going to frame the time slip for these runs. In the end it was Bradford with the win, but losing lane choice in the final to Treble.

 (W) Craig Treble (Team Tigue Suzuki) 0.030 7.072 190.81
 (L) Tom Bradford (Hal's Speed Shop Buell) 0.026 7.301 182.06
4:42 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 79 degrees, relative humidity 28 percent, barometer 29.19 inches, adjusted altitude 2,385 feet, track temperature 89 degrees.

The sun is setting as the two bikes come to the line for the final. This is Bradford's first final and Treble's 20th. This is Treble's third final here. He won here in 2003 and his last final was Brainard in 2004. Pretty even at the hit but from there on it was all Treble. Great way to end a season.
