Round 1 |
POMONA, Calif. - POMONA 2 - Notes from round 1 qualifying in
Top Alcohol Funny Car at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 42nd
annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals listing lane,
driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following
run:
Left Lane: Nancy Matter Runs 7.702/105.11, Now #1
Right Lane: Paul Crifasi Runs 10.718/80.27, Now #2
11:39 a.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 71 degrees,
relative humidity 56 percent, barometer 29.06 inches, adjusted altitude
2,031 feet, track temperature 86 degrees.
Alcohol Funny cars are on the pad as the weather conditions begin to
change. It's been overcast and foggy all morning now that's beginning to
burn off. Crifasi was away first but there were parts sliding down the
track next to him at about 150 feet down range. Matter shook hard but
tried to drive through it. She wound up lifting early as well. Left Lane: Roger Bateman Runs 5.936/249.35, Now #2
Right Lane: John Patton Runs 5.774/250.18, Now #1
Bateman is here fresh off his Division 7 win over the huge field
of entries at Las Vegas. Bateman had to step off and back on about 60
feet out at the car tried to turn left on him. Patton had no such
problems and gets a good baseline for the weekend. Left Lane: Hank Coolidge Runs 5.756/247.93, Now #1
Right Lane: Mert Littlefield Runs 5.893/232.43, Now #3 Coolidge
moves Patton down a spot and Littlefield opens with a fair run. Left Lane: Larry Miner Runs 5.787/247.66, Now #3
Right Lane: Mike Drake Runs 5.980/243.37, Now #6
Miner was away first and the proceeded to keep the funny car right
in the middle of the left lane. Drake has a nice looking run but he and
Miner both need to pick up the bottom end of the race track. Both carded
60 foot numbers over one second. Left Lane: Mark Woznichak Runs 5.705/249.26, Now #1
Right Lane: John Weaver Runs 5.801/241.93, Now #5
Woznichak waited until Weaver was about 200 feet out before he
left so it was hard to compare his run to Weaver's by eyeball. The
timers did a pretty good job though and 'The Woz' is the new leader in
the clubhouse. Weaver's run was nice until about the finish line when he
trailed a bit of smoke out of the pipes. A little bit of damage but no
cleanup. Left Lane: David Ray Runs 5.710/251.81, Now #2
Right Lane: B. Harrington Runs 5.804/245.49, Now #7
Ray just misses the top spot but does set the top speed for the
class at the moment. Harrington's run looked good and he was actually
.03 better than Ray to 60 feet. It was after that his times fell off in
comparison. Left Lane: Sean Bellemeur No Time, Now #14
Right Lane: Shawn Jones Runs 5.816/250.09, Now #8
Bellemeur landed a 1.029 sixty and it sounded like something went
bang in the engine. He coasted and stopped short of the finish. Jones
barely sneaks into the top half of the field. I've heard the line of
funny cars is still to the back of the staging area here at Pomona. Left Lane: S. Gasparrelli Runs 6.750/149.45, Now #12
Right Lane: Dennis Taylor No Time, Now #16
Taylor appeared to scrub some of the shiny off the side before the
finish so I'm pretty certain that his 5.952/195.39 is going to be DQd.
Gasparrelli continues to struggle with his racer. Left Lane: Paul Anderson Runs 6.000/241.63, Now #13
Right Lane: Clint Thompson Runs 5.988/248.02, Now #12
Anderson did the bunny hop and slapped the pedal at about 330.
Thompson's run appeared unexciting until after the finish line. There
was a huge cloud of dust after the finish. I don't think he touched. Left Lane: Vern Moats Runs 5.716/250.00, Now #4
Right Lane: Jay Payne Runs 5.673/257.92, Now #1
Payne and Moats both surveyed the traction from all over their
lanes but in the end Payne walks away for low ET and top speed. Moats is
top half on his side of the stripe. Left Lane: Brian Hough Runs 5.623/253.80, Now #1
Right Lane: Bret Williamson Runs 6.321/162.94, Now #17 Williamson
just cost himself a bunch of bucks as the burst panel went flying and
parts came out of the engine. It must have appeared worse than it was as
the Safari never rolled and the cal was fire the next pair. Hough
emerged from the smoke and thunder with the new low ET of the session
and the #1 spot in the show. Left Lane: Jeff Burnett Runs 5.809/233.64, Now #12
Right Lane: Doug Gordon Runs 5.751/249.35, Now #6
Burnett explored the territory close to the center line for the
first 100 feet but then hauled the car back to the center for the
remainder of his run. Gordon sneaks quietly into the top half. Now we
have the safari out looking at both lanes around the finish line and
after. Left Lane: Ron August Jr Runs 5.660/246.84, Now #2
Right Lane: Ross Stickler Runs 5.839/245.49, Now #15
This makes car numbers twenty five and and twenty six to attempt
to qualify this session. August legs one out and has the burst panel
parted from the car right in the lights. The Safari is out cleaning the
lane and his car sits smoking at the last turnout. With the numbers he
ran I doubt he cares much at this point. Stickler, in the National Guard
sponsored Vette, makes the show at #15. As soon as the lanes are cleared
we'll return with Alcohol Dragster.

Round 2 |
POMONA, Calif. - POMONA 2 - Notes from round 2 qualifying in
Top Alcohol Funny Car at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 42nd
annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals listing lane,
driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order
following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order
prior to run:
Left Lane: Mert Littlefield Runs 6.042/226.58, Now #16
Best prior run: 5.893/232.43, Was #16
Right Lane: Larry Miner Runs 10.222/100.99, Now #10
Best prior run: 5.787/247.66, Was #10
12:29 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 74 degrees,
relative humidity 35 percent, barometer 29.19 inches, adjusted altitude
2,020 feet, track temperature 98 degrees.
Littlefield starts the session on the bump and after this hit he's
still there. Miner struck the tires at the hit and coasted on down. Left Lane: Mike Drake Runs 5.875/248.29, Now #16
Best prior run: 5.980/243.37, Was #18
Right Lane: Mark Woznichak Runs 5.908/224.43, Now #4
Best prior run: 5.705/249.26, Was #4 Drake
appeared to get a late start on the burnout and the tracks are barely
far enough back that the crew can line him up. Drake made the situation
work and he bumps in on the bubble. Woz slows a ton from hit hit on
Thursday. Couldn't see what happened but it did sound like the rpms got
away from one driver or the other before the shift. Left Lane: Shawn Jones Runs 5.728/249.63, Now #7
Best prior run: 5.816/250.09, Was #14
Right Lane: S. Gasparrelli Runs 5.731/246.80, Now #8
Best prior run: 6.750/149.45, Was #22 Both
drivers and teams will be pretty happy after this hit. Both get down the
track and into the top half. That bumps Drake and puts Stickler on the
spot. Left Lane: Dennis Taylor Runs 5.787/247.43, Now #13
No Prior Run
Right Lane: Hank Coolidge Runs 5.780/250.09, Now #10
Best prior run: 5.756/247.93, Was #10 Taylor
overcomes his wall scraping incident from yesterday and comes back here
in session two and makes the show. Coolidge slows from his first. Left Lane: Doug Gordon Runs 7.342/129.95, Now #9
Best prior run: 5.751/249.35, Was #9
Right Lane: Sean Bellemeur Runs 5.787/252.00, Now #12
No Prior Run Gordon has his
Camaro just make a right hand turn on him at 330. He had to lift and
coasted to the other end. Bellemeur shakes off his Thursday issues and
bumps Burnett. Harrington is now on the bubble. Left Lane: John Patton Runs 5.874/245.67, Now #11
Best prior run: 5.774/250.18, Was #11
Right Lane: Nancy Matter Runs 6.082/244.47, Now #24
Best prior run: 7.702/105.11, Was #25 Patton
loses a tenth and remains #11. Matter moved out of the groove at the hit
and struggled to get the car back to the center. She's down to one last
shot later today. Left Lane: John Weaver Runs 5.736/249.07, Now #10
Best prior run: 5.801/241.93, Was #15
Right Lane: Roger Bateman Runs 5.662/253.42, Now #3
Best prior run: 5.936/249.35, Was #21 Bateman
is the biggest news of the pair as he goes from #21 to #3 just like
that. He was out of the groove to the right early in the run and was
pretty close to the wall at the stripe. Weaver gets well away from the
bump. Harrington is bumped and Taylor is on the bump. Left Lane: Clint Thompson Runs 12.491/68.59, Now #22
Best prior run: 5.988/248.02, Was #22
Right Lane: Brian Hough Runs 5.651/255.73, Now #1
Best prior run: 5.623/253.80, Was #1 Hough
was #1 coming in and falls just a bit short of his first run. Thompson
rattled the tires right into smoke at the hit and coasted on out. Left Lane: B. Harrington Runs 5.777/246.80, Now #14
Best prior run: 5.804/245.49, Was #17
Right Lane: David Ray Runs 8.914/99.13, Now #6
Best prior run: 5.710/251.81, Was #6 Harrington
goes from #17 back into the field was a run that saw the Camaro
wandering the lane a bit after half track. Ray shook the tires and
called it off early. Left Lane: Bret Williamson Runs 5.887/232.47, Now #21
Best prior run: 6.321/162.94, Was #25
Right Lane: Paul Anderson Runs 6.125/242.15, Now #24
Best prior run: 6.000/241.63, Was #23 Anderson
shook his brains out at the 1-2 shift and had to lift. He finished the
run but remains well outside of the field. Williamson improves but is
well off the 5.787 it takes to crack the field. Left Lane: Ross Stickler Runs 9.693/75.38, Now #19
Best prior run: 5.839/245.49, Was #19
Right Lane: Vern Moats Runs 5.875/250.74, Now #7
Best prior run: 5.716/250.00, Was #7 Stickler
rattled the tires so hard that the chute fell out of the pack at about
330 feet. Not going to make the show dragging that thing! Moats is doing
some head scratching as he rattled the tires pretty good, even though he
runs 5.875. Left Lane: Jay Payne Runs 5.660/257.87, Now #2
Best prior run: 5.673/257.92, Was #4 Payne
is the final car of the session and moves him around August on the basis
of mph. Payne has top speed of the meet for the class and ties August
for #2 in the ET department.

Round 3 |
POMONA, Calif. - POMONA 2 - Notes from final, round 3
qualifying in Top Alcohol Funny Car at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing
Series, 42nd annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals
listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position
in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in
order prior to run:
Left Lane: Paul Anderson Runs 6.049/243.63, Now #24
Best prior run: 6.000/241.63, Was #24
Right Lane: Shawn Jones Runs 10.322/82.20, Now #8
Best prior run: 5.728/249.63, Was #8
5:01 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 70 degrees, relative
humidity 31 percent, barometer 29.16 inches, adjusted altitude 1,989
feet, track temperature 80 degrees.
Jones came into the final session in the #8 spot and since he shook
and pedaled several times it was a good thing he was. Anderson had to
pedal once in the left lane and that ended his weekend. Left Lane: Sean Bellemeur Runs 5.762/252.99, Now #13
Best prior run: 5.787/252.00, Was #15
Right Lane: John Weaver Runs 5.767/251.25, Now #10
Best prior run: 5.736/249.07, Was #10 Miner
is on the bump with one of the THREE 5.877 ETs on the qualifying list.
Two of those are qualified and one not. Bellemeur moves up two and
Weaver remains #10. Left Lane: Ron August Jr No Time, Now #3
Best prior run: 5.660/246.84, Was #3
Right Lane: Mike Drake Runs 5.885/248.52, Now #20
Best prior run: 5.875/248.29, Was #20 August
missed the session earlier today and the one thing he didn't miss in
this session was the 330 marker. He set an altitude record for foam 330
blocks and darn near stuck the wall bringing it back. Drake misses the
cut by about a tenth. The DQd time for August was 7.273/131.54. Left Lane: Brian Hough Runs 5.605/257.48, Now #1
Best prior run: 5.623/253.80, Was #1
Right Lane: Mert Littlefield Runs 7.558/118.32, Now #22
Best prior run: 5.893/232.43, Was #22 Hough
comes into the session in the top spot by a full .04 of a second. It'll
be interesting see if that holds off the hitters in this final session.
Little field has some work to do here as he really hasn't been close
this weekend. Hough cemented the position with an out of the groove run
that I thought would end with a centerline violation. It didn't and he
widened the gap between himself and the field. Littlefield was coasting
early as the he spun the tires almost at the hit. Left Lane: Mark Woznichak Runs 5.901/245.81, Now #6
Best prior run: 5.705/249.26, Was #5
Right Lane: Dennis Taylor Runs 5.668/252.99, Now #5
Best prior run: 5.787/247.43, Was #17 Taylor
waited until the very last moment but he uncorks a great pass and slides
right into the top half of the field. That bumped Miner from the field. Left Lane: Larry Miner Runs 6.856/135.66, Now #17
Best prior run: 5.787/247.66, Was #17
Right Lane: Bret Williamson Runs 14.473/61.16, Now #21
Best prior run: 5.887/232.47, Was #21 Miner
gets his last shot at bumping his way back in. His early numbers looked
good with a .966 60 foot number and a 2.536 330 but it sounded like the
car didn't want to shift going into high. He coasted across the line and
heads for the trailer. Williamson spun the tires early and way never a
factor. He's packing as well. Left Lane: Jeff Burnett Runs 5.929/195.87, Now #18
Best prior run: 5.809/233.64, Was #18
Right Lane: John Patton Runs 5.753/251.72, Now #13
Best prior run: 5.774/250.18, Was #15 Burnett
was all over the left lane and he won't be racing tomorrow. Patton
improves and picks up two spots. Left Lane: Hank Coolidge Runs 6.474/159.32, Now #15
Best prior run: 5.756/247.93, Was #14
Right Lane: B. Harrington Runs 5.734/248.89, Now #11
Best prior run: 5.777/246.80, Was #16 Coolidge
wandered the right lane before clicking it very early. Harrington gets
off the dreaded bump in grand style and Bellemeur replaces him. Left Lane: Vern Moats Runs 5.701/252.71, Now #6
Best prior run: 5.716/250.00, Was #8
Right Lane: Jay Payne Runs 5.601/260.46, Now #1
Best prior run: 5.660/257.87, Was #2 Payne
JUST goes around Hough by .004 to take over the qualifying lead. He also
increased top speed for the class to over 260 mph. Left Lane: Nancy Matter Runs 5.924/243.11, Now #24
Best prior run: 6.082/244.47, Was #25
Right Lane: Clint Thompson Runs 5.875/252.95, Now #20
Best prior run: 5.988/248.02, Was #23 Good
runs by both drivers but someone has to DNQ and this IS a stout field.
Both Matter and Thompson will be watching round one on Saturday. Left Lane: Roger Bateman Runs 5.631/255.00, Now #3
Best prior run: 5.662/253.42, Was #4
Right Lane: Doug Gordon Runs 5.684/253.52, Now #6
Best prior run: 5.751/249.35, Was #13 Bateman
leapfrogs August and takes over the #3 spot. Gordon goes all the way
into the top half of the show in the other lane. Conditions was really
good out there right now. Left Lane: S. Gasparrelli Runs 6.147/176.97, Now #11
Best prior run: 5.731/246.80, Was #11
Right Lane: Ross Stickler Runs 5.739/248.89, Now #14
Best prior run: 5.839/245.49, Was #19 Gasparrelli's
woes just continue. He got to about 800 feet and then the loud bang and
a flash followed by the hatch spinning through the air lead to the end
of his last attempt. Lucky for him he was already in the show. Stickler
pulls it together and bumps Bellemeur. Left Lane: David Ray Runs 5.638/256.26, Now #4
Best prior run: 5.710/251.81, Was #9 Ray
should be the last attempt of the session. He was already in at #9 but
this pass sends him into the top half where he'll pick his lane in round
one. Next is round one of eliminations in Super Gas.

(L) Brian Hough (Jerry's Towing Firebird) 0.061 5.867 239.02
Hough actually had the lead in this pair until after the 330
marker. At that point Patton drove around him for the win. (W) Dennis Taylor (Plumbing Concepts Camaro) 0.066 5.696 252.05
(L) Steve Gasparrelli (Plumbing Concepts Monte 0.085 7.182 138.78
Taylor is a way first and Gasparrelli's woes continue. He was off
the pedal before half track as the car made a huge dive to the right.
Taylor stays glued for the win. (W) Bernie Harrington (Harrington M'Sports Cama 0.065 5.811 243.72
(L) Ron August Jr (Camaro) 0.081 5.798 222.11
August used all of his lane in the loss to Harrington. He wandered
so hard that he might actually have touched the wall with the headers on
the left side of the engine. Harrington with the win and a date for
Sunday in round two. (W) Roger Bateman (NobelSmile.com Camaro) 0.058 5.720 250.92
(L) Ross Stickler (National Guard Corvette) 0.115 5.820 247.11
Bateman follows the left lane pattern as the car makes the abrupt
move towards the centerline. He hauled the car back and took the win
over Stickler. 2:09 p.m. and guess what. We're stopped for a light rain
shower. I knew it was getting dark out there. (W) David Ray (Follow A Dream Avenger) 0.069 5.664 255.82
(L) John Weaver (Meer Capital Partners Camaro) 0.107 7.037 123.95
2:14 p.m. and the shower is over. Real bad luck for Weaver as his
mount rattling the tires so hard that the chute came out at about 300
feet. Of course Ray runs a 5.6 and would have been tough. (W) Hank Coolidge (Pro Automotive Firebird) 0.008 5.774 234.74
(L) Jay Payne (Valvoline Camaro) 0.040 6.848 139.27
Now here's a shocker. Coolidge has a psychic light. Payne had a
problem and combined it means the #1 qualifier is outa here! That was by
far and away the worst run of the weekend for Payne and darned near the
best for Coolidge taking the win. Next round it's Coolidge vs Woznichak;
Ray vs Harrington; Patton vs Gordon and Batemen vs Taylor. Alcohol
dragsters are up next.

POMONA, Calif. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 2
eliminations in Top Alcohol Funny Car at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing
Series, 42nd annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals: W/L Driver R-Time E-Time Speed
(W) Doug Gordon (Morro Bay Cabinets Camaro) 0.046 5.646 253.61
(L) John Patton (Trans Am) 0.167 8.726 102.68
12:35 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 77 degrees,
relative humidity 40 percent, barometer 29.20 inches, adjusted altitude
2,349 feet, track temperature 94 degrees.
Gordon makes his best run of the weekend and even if Patton hadn't
stepped off the pedal at about 600 feet he'd of had a hard time catching
him. (W) Roger Bateman (NobelSmile.com Camaro) 0.063 5.742 251.95
(L) Dennis Taylor (Plumbing Concepts Camaro) 0.049 5.761 249.30
Winner of this pair will get Gordon next round. We have a winner!
Roger Bateman's MOV: 0.0053 seconds (approximately 23 inches). Man that
was close. If Taylor had a bit straighter run he just might have held
him off, but as it was he used a lot of the right lane. Gordon chooses
the lane. (W) David Ray (Follow A Dream Avenger) 0.092 5.651 256.06
(L) Bernie Harrington (Harrington M'Sports Cama 0.058 7.923 111.78
Harrington was away first but just before half track I saw the
blower belt snake out from under the car and slither across the track.
Day with the win. (W) Mark Woznichak (Rancho Framing Camaro) 0.082 5.757 251.81
(L) Hank Coolidge (Pro Automotive Firebird) 0.216 9.520 101.92
Coolidge has a horrible light and then has the car go away on him.
Those two items might have been a package as he was off the throttle
early. Woznichak goes on for the win and will face Day in the other semi
without choice.

Round 3 |
POMONA, Calif. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 3
eliminations in Top Alcohol Funny Car at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing
Series, 42nd annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals: W/L Driver R-Time E-Time Speed
(W) David Ray (Follow A Dream Avenger) 0.041 5.706 255.77
(L) Mark Woznichak (Rancho Framing Camaro) 0.136 5.644 253.56
2:44 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 73 degrees, relative
humidity 34 percent, barometer 29.16 inches, adjusted altitude 2,024
feet, track temperature 94 degrees.
The Woz was ever so late and Ray managed to hold on to the lead and
take the win. (W) Roger Bateman (NobelSmile.com Camaro) 0.001 5.672 255.68
(L) Doug Gordon (Morro Bay Cabinets Camaro) 0.107 5.653 255.29
This was almost a replay of the first pair. Gordon took the nap
and I think it's fair to say Bateman wasn't late with hs .001 light. He
can open his eyes now and take his lane choice into the final against
Ray.

4:58 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 79 degrees, relative

Ray had an 009 light and was second to Bateman's 008. Bateman
proceeded to turn left off the line and cross the stripe around 330. In
fact it looked like the real wheel touched the block. He did lift and
the win went to Ray and the 'Follow A Dream' team.
