Results for Qualifying Round 1
POMONA, Calif. - POMONA 2 - Notes from round 1 qualifying in
Top Alcohol Dragster at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 42nd
annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals listing lane,
driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following
        run:
Left Lane: James Day Runs 5.677/249.63, Now #2
Right Lane: Aaron Olivarez Runs 5.456/257.78, Now #1
12:29 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 75 degrees, relative humidity 48 percent, barometer 29.06 inches, adjusted altitude 2,200 feet, track temperature 94 degrees.

The early gloomy conditions have melted away and we have just a haze on the horizon.

Day's engine has a hole out at the hit, but he still makes a nice pass. Olivarez has a nice .945 sixty foot time and makes a clean pass to set the pace for the rest of the field.

Left Lane: Garrett Bateman Runs 5.395/256.65, Now #1
Right Lane: Brian Smith Runs 5.429/255.73, Now #2
Two moore fueler's to the line. Bateman was the winner last week at the Vegas LODRS race and continues to show his power. Smith runs a career best ET and MPH right beside him, even as he slowed at the top end.
Left Lane: Dick Garlets Runs 5.620/244.78, Now #5
Right Lane: Jim Whiteley Runs 5.402/258.91, Now #2
We finally get a blown alcohol car in the right lane. The long cars are having a better time navigating the Pomona track as we get two more great passes. Garlets car moved towards the centerline near the top end, but he pulled it back away from the lights.
Left Lane: Sean O'Bannon Runs 5.342/268.06, Now #1
Right Lane: Chris Demke Runs 5.417/264.39, Now #4
A great side by side run for both cars and we have a new top qualifier. The blown cars stayed straight and true from start to finish.
Left Lane: Frank Dischbein Runs 5.620/256.26, Now #8
Right Lane: Johnny Ahten Runs 5.541/246.30, Now #7
Ahten is running the former Shelly Anderson TF'er. Dischbein has some shake off the line and drives through it to tie his prior best MPH. Ahten's engine starts to drop cylinders near the top end and it hurt his times.
Left Lane: Mark Niver Runs 5.374/256.06, Now #2
Right Lane: Carl Magee No Time, Now #12
Niver's Billet Bullet fueler will get a single, as Magee can't get the engine started. Nice pass until near the lights, where more and more candles are blown out. He still runs well enough to take over the current #2 spot.
Left Lane: Darryl Hitchman Runs 5.477/264.08, Now #9
Right Lane: Duane Shields Runs 5.347/265.95, Now #2
Shields continues to thunder and makes strong pass into the #2 spot.
Left Lane: Ashley Force Runs 5.415/264.13, Now #6
Right Lane: Dave Hirata Runs 10.718/85.28, Now #15
Hirata has a little problem getting the engine to start and Force patiently waits for him. He strikes the tires at the hit and is up in smoke big time. Force makes her pass without any drama and will have something to use for tomorrow's tune up.
Left Lane: Brandon Pierce Runs 5.412/247.66, Now #7
Right Lane: John Finke Runs 5.273/268.60, Now #1
BANG! Finke makes a statement with all the candles lit. We have a new leader for ET and MPH. Pierce starts to drop cylinders by mid-track and still makes the current top half of the field.
Left Lane: Spencer Massey Runs 5.333/267.80, Now #3
Right Lane: Bill Reichert Runs 5.265/274.00, Now #1
Day was on the bump with a 5.677, but the hits keep coming with two more great passes. The fuelers are making it look easy this weekend.
Left Lane: Cody Perkins Runs 6.088/163.45, Now #20
Right Lane: Joey Severance Runs 5.428/262.90, Now #12
Perkins is away on a good one until just before mid-track, where the car slows. Severance keeps it straight and moves into the field.
Left Lane: Dave Heitzman Runs 14.178/72.99, Now #23
Right Lane: Steve Federlin Runs 5.415/264.60, Now #10
Heitzman smokes the tires at the hit, while Federlin makes a good tune up pass, but misses the top half of the field.
Right Lane: Lee Callaway Runs 14.244/73.62, Now #24
Callaway will be the twenty-fifth dragster to attempt to qualify, but he strikes the tires at the green and slows.

1:14 p.m. Reichert will be your number one qualifier and Hitchman will take the bump spot.

POMONA, Calif. - POMONA 2 - Notes from round 2 qualifying in
Top Alcohol Dragster at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 42nd
annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals listing lane,
driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order
following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order
        prior to run:
Left Lane: Jim Whiteley Runs 5.419/259.91, Now #8
Best prior run: 5.402/258.91, Was #8
Right Lane: Darryl Hitchman No Time, Now #16
Best prior run: 5.477/264.08, Was #16
11:49 a.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 74 degrees, relative humidity 35 percent, barometer 29.19 inches, adjusted altitude 2,020 feet, track temperature 98 degrees.

Beautiful conditions today, but no joy for Hitchman as he has no reverse and motors on down the track. Whiteley waits for him to clear the track and makes a clean pass and slows a little to stay #8 for now.

Left Lane: Joey Severance Runs 5.564/253.33, Now #13
Best prior run: 5.428/262.90, Was #13
Right Lane: Mark Niver Runs 5.422/260.56, Now #6
Best prior run: 5.374/256.06, Was #6
Both cars run close to yesterdays times, but no improvements for either.
Left Lane: Duane Shields Runs 5.432/260.06, Now #5
Best prior run: 5.347/265.95, Was #5
Right Lane: James Day No Time, Now #20
Best prior run: 5.677/249.63, Was #20
Day will have to wait until the final session, as the team pushes the car back to the return road. Shields is in and out of the throttle by 60 feet and still runs a low five forty. Fuel is neat!
Left Lane: John Finke Runs 11.275/102.03, Now #2
Best prior run: 5.273/268.60, Was #2
Right Lane: Garrett Bateman Runs 5.527/248.66, Now #7
Best prior run: 5.395/256.65, Was #7
Finke is up in smoke at the hit and clicks right away. Bateman joins the "slower than yesterday" club.
Left Lane: Johnny Ahten Runs 5.857/242.71, Now #17
Best prior run: 5.541/246.30, Was #17
Right Lane: Brandon Pierce Runs 5.458/254.71, Now #9
Best prior run: 5.412/247.66, Was #9
Ahten has holes out at the hit and slows. Pierce runs close to his prior time, but doesn't improve.
Left Lane: Carl Magee Runs 5.812/232.75, Now #21
                                  No Prior Run
Right Lane: Frank Dischbein Runs 5.622/254.14, Now #18
Best prior run: 5.620/256.26, Was #18
Magee's team couldn't get the car started on his first attempt yesterday. Lots of raw fuel in left lane and lots of engine smoke in the right lane. Neither car will get in this session.
Left Lane: Brian Smith Runs 13.957/76.61, Now #14
Best prior run: 5.429/255.73, Was #14
Right Lane: Sean O'Bannon Runs 5.401/266.00, Now #4
Best prior run: 5.342/268.06, Was #4
No joy for either team, but Smith has the worst of it with tire smoke at the hit. O'Bannon makes a clean pass and stays #4 for now.
Left Lane: Bill Reichert Runs 13.661/60.31, Now #1
Best prior run: 5.265/274.00, Was #1
Right Lane: Ashley Force Runs 5.388/264.60, Now #7
Best prior run: 5.415/264.13, Was #11
Another "up in smoke" in the left lane, as Reichert clouds in the starting line at the hit. Force is the first car to actually improve this session and picks up four spots into the top half of the field.
Left Lane: Steve Federlin Runs 5.383/264.29, Now #7
Best prior run: 5.415/264.60, Was #11
Right Lane: Dick Garlets Runs 8.064/112.59, Now #19
Best prior run: 5.620/244.78, Was #19
Federlin finds the left lane to his liking and bumps Force down a spot taking over the #7 spot on the ladder. Garlets shakes, spins, drops cylinders, and finally shuts off.
Left Lane: Dave Hirata Runs 5.651/253.47, Now #21
Best prior run: 10.718/85.28, Was #23
Right Lane: Cody Perkins Runs 5.436/260.46, Now #15
Best prior run: 6.088/163.45, Was #22
Neither car is in the field and both are capable. Hirata's car is slow off the line and drops cylinders down track. Perkins finds a ton of power from yesterday and dumps into the tough field.
Left Lane: Lee Callaway Runs 5.398/267.80, Now #10
Best prior run: 14.244/73.62, Was #25
Right Lane: Randy Eakins Runs 6.436/125.20, Now #25
                                  No Prior Run
Aaron Olivarez is on the bump spot at 5.456. Eakins didn't make a pass yesterday and Callaway would just a s soon forget about his attempt. Callaway gets it all together today and almost gets into the top half of the field. Eakins has a good leave, but drops cylinders right away. He pulls the chute early and coasts on out.
Left Lane: Aaron Olivarez Runs 5.434/263.56, Now #16
Best prior run: 5.456/257.78, Was #17
Right Lane: Spencer Massey Runs 5.386/267.64, Now #3
Best prior run: 5.333/267.80, Was #3
Cody Perkins is on the bump spot at 5.436 and Olivarez tunes it up enough to put himself back in the field, but still on the bump. Massey shows consistency and stays #3 with a clean pass.
Left Lane: Chris Demke Runs 5.444/263.41, Now #13
Best prior run: 5.417/264.39, Was #13
Right Lane: Dave Heitzman Runs 8.972/96.59, Now #26
Best prior run: 14.178/72.99, Was #26
Last pair for the session. Demke takes the long way down using a lot of race track getting to the finish line. It cost him, as he doesn't improve. Heitzman launches hard and then shuts it down early.

12:30 p.m. Bill Reichert stays number one at 5.265 and Aaron Olivarez is on the bump spot at 5.434.

Aaron Olivarez starts the session on the bump spot at 5.434. Magee looks like a sprinkler going down the track with raw fuel out of most of the cylinders. Bateman picks up MPH, but slows from his best prior run.

Left Lane: Dave Heitzman Runs 5.485/260.91, Now #20
Best prior run: 8.972/96.59, Was #26
Right Lane: Dave Hirata Runs 5.258/264.13, Now #1
Best prior run: 5.651/253.47, Was #22
Talk about going from the outhouse to the penthouse! Hirata has struggled on his prior two passes, but gets it all together for the last pass. He starts with a .929 sixty foot time and improves from there. Heitzman makes a similar level of improvement, but will not get in the tough field.
Left Lane: Brandon Pierce Runs 5.416/254.47, Now #13
Best prior run: 5.412/247.66, Was #13
Right Lane: Lee Callaway Runs 5.385/261.83, Now #9
Best prior run: 5.398/267.80, Was #11
Brian Smith is on the bump spot at 5.429. Pierce repeats on his prior best and Callaway makes it two good passes in a row to just miss the top half of the field.
Left Lane: Spencer Massey Runs 7.710/111.92, Now #4
Best prior run: 5.333/267.80, Was #4
Right Lane: Brian Smith Runs 5.620/253.04, Now #16
Best prior run: 5.429/255.73, Was #16
Smith is on the bump with his career best ET and Speed. Massey runs out of firing cylinders by mid-track and lifts. Smith gets further down the track and runs out of "go fast" too.
Left Lane: Frank Dischbein Runs 5.713/251.34, Now #22
Best prior run: 5.620/256.26, Was #22
Right Lane: Johnny Ahten Runs 6.041/235.39, Now #21
Best prior run: 5.541/246.30, Was #21
No joy for these two with lots of raw fuel in the evening air.
Left Lane: Dick Garlets Runs 5.949/240.64, Now #23
Best prior run: 5.620/244.78, Was #23
Right Lane: Jim Whiteley Runs 5.373/262.28, Now #7
Best prior run: 5.402/258.91, Was #12
Garlets continues to struggle, while Whiteley is on a rip with a strong pass into the top half of the stout field. It's dark enough now that we are seeing the nitro flames from the engines.
Left Lane: Darryl Hitchman Runs 5.747/252.76, Now #19
Best prior run: 5.477/264.08, Was #19
Right Lane: Steve Federlin Runs 5.420/265.48, Now #9
Best prior run: 5.383/264.29, Was #9
Looks like the left lane has the dropped cylinder curse. Hitchman gets a full dose and can't improve. Federlin runs close to his prior times and will stay number nine for now..
Left Lane: James Day Runs 5.506/246.48, Now #21
Best prior run: 5.677/249.63, Was #24
Right Lane: Bill Reichert Runs 10.198/85.71, Now #2
Best prior run: 5.265/274.00, Was #2
Reichert has another broken run as the car doesn't move well after 60 feet. Day makes his personal best, but will not get into the field this weekend.
Left Lane: Randy Eakins Runs 6.308/185.84, Now #26
Best prior run: 6.436/125.20, Was #26
Right Lane: John Finke Runs 5.319/269.24, Now #3
Best prior run: 5.273/268.60, Was #3
Nice pass for Finke with lots of flames from the headers right down the track. Eakins struggles to keep the candles lit and stays #26.
Left Lane: Mark Niver Runs 7.775/154.02, Now #8
Best prior run: 5.374/256.06, Was #8
Right Lane: Duane Shields Runs 5.315/265.01, Now #4
Best prior run: 5.347/265.95, Was #6
Niver leaves hard and then clicks it off. The right lane cards another strong pass, as Shields picks up two positions on the ladder with a clean and straight pass. Lots of five thirty passes tonight!
Left Lane: Sean O'Bannon Runs 5.339/267.91, Now #6
Best prior run: 5.342/268.06, Was #6
Right Lane: Chris Demke Runs 5.387/264.39, Now #11
Best prior run: 5.417/264.39, Was #14
WOW! Two great side by side five thirty passes for the blown alcohol dragsters. Looks like the increase in blower ratios has helped these guys.
Left Lane: Ashley Force Runs 5.382/265.22, Now #9
Best prior run: 5.388/264.60, Was #12
Right Lane: Aaron Olivarez Runs 5.456/266.21, Now #17
Best prior run: 5.434/263.56, Was #17
Olivarez can only match his first qualifying pass ET and will not bump back into the show. Force continues to improve and makes a strong pass into the current #9 spot. She misses the top half of the field by a hundredth.
Right Lane: Joey Severance Runs 5.418/266.48, Now #15
Best prior run: 5.428/262.90, Was #15
Last car to attempt to improve on his qualifying time. Severance runs by himself and it sounded like he may have banged the blower on the top end. He improves on his ET and MPH, but will stay #15.

5:02 p.m. Brian Smith is on the bump spot at 5.429.

eliminations in Top Alcohol Dragster at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing
Series, 42nd annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals:
 W/L Driver R-Time E-Time Speed

 (W) Mark Niver (Billet Machine A/FD) 0.227 5.349 260.76
 (L) Ashley Force (Castrol/AAA A/FD) 0.081 6.007 237.21
2:20 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 69 degrees, relative humidity 52 percent, barometer 29.07 inches, adjusted altitude 1,942 feet, track temperature 84 degrees.

A weather front has blown into Pomona and the conditions have changed a bunch since earlier today. It definitely looks like winter has come to the races this afternoon.

Force has a major advantage off the line, but the engine starts to drop cylinders right away. Niver ducks a bullet after his terrible RT and keeps more cylinders lit longer to take the win. He makes his best pass of the weekend.

 (W) Jim Whiteley (B/AD) 0.075 5.348 263.15
 (L) Steve Federlin (Impatience Racing B/AD) 0.049 5.380 264.08
Federlin gets off the line first and leads Whiteley until almost mid-track. Whiteley has the power to set a new personal best ET and MPH to come from behind for the close win. Jim Whiteley's incremental times: 60ft-0.911 sec., 330ft-2.354, 660ft-3.502/214.48mph, 1,000ft-4.497
 (W) Sean O'Bannon (Jack O'Bannon Racing B/AD) 0.057 5.322 268.38
 (L) Lee Callaway (Skull Gear A/FD) 0.052 5.362 270.70
Great side by side race to show parity between the fuelers and the blown cars. Both cars improve on their qualifying times, but O'Bannon is in front by sixty feet and stays there for the win.
 (W) Spencer Massey (Snowman Racing A/FD) 0.016 5.362 268.49
 (L) Chris Demke (Peen-Rite-Abrasive B/AD) 0.200 5.336 266.69
Demke was asleep on the line and has to watch Massey just pull away to steal the hole shot win. Odd!
 (W) Garrett Bateman (Big O Tires A/FD) 0.050 5.408 260.71
 (L) Duane Shields (Shortline Express A/FD) 0.061 12.957 92.08
Shields' tires spin at the hit and it is all over. Bateman runs close to his qualifying time on a clean pass.
 (W) Brandon Pierce (A/FD) 0.044 5.336 260.11
 (L) John Finke (Bobcat Express A/FD) 0.103 5.279 272.45
Whoa! Nice upset win for Pierce, as Finke was very late off the line and just couldn't make up the difference by the lights. Pierce finds a bunch of ET and MPH over his qualifying times to nail the win. Brandon Pierce's MOV: 0.0025 seconds (approximately 12 inches).

2:40 p.m. Looks like some more sprinkles and Rick Stewart stops the action for a while.

 (W) Bill Reichert (Rislone A/FD) 0.080 5.273 273.94
 (L) Joey Severance (Severance Racing B/AD) 0.009 5.399 264.55
2:45 p.m. ...and we are back. That didn't take long.

Reichert set his only good ET in the first qualifying session and smoked the tires both attempts after that.Severance gives it his all off the line with a great .009 RT, but Reichert seems to have found his problem and freight trains on by after mid-track to get the win.

 (W) Dave Hirata (Skull Shine A/FD) 0.090 5.814 231.83
 (L) Brian Smith (A/FD) 0.033 15.629 66.16
Smith is up in smoke at the hit and Hirata was there for the picking, as the engine starts to drop cylinders at mid-track. A win is a win, any way you get it!

2:53 p.m. The pairings for Round Two: Hirata vs. Niver; Bateman vs. Massey; Reichert vs. Whiteley; and Pierce vs. O'Bannon.

Series, 42nd annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals:
 W/L Driver R-Time E-Time Speed

 (W) Bill Reichert (Rislone A/FD) 0.065 5.319 259.71
 (L) Jim Whiteley (B/AD) 0.119 5.414 254.38
12:45 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 72 degrees, relative humidity 36 percent, barometer 29.19 inches, adjusted altitude 1,931 feet, track temperature 91 degrees.

The weather conditions are very different than we had in first round. Our 2006 National Champion, Reichert, shows why he won, by taking the lead at the start and running the table with all of the numbers to take the easy win. Whitely was game, but couldn't match the fueler's power.

 (W) Dave Hirata (Skull Shine A/FD) 0.035 5.332 267.64
 (L) Mark Niver (Billet Machine A/FD) 0.082 5.389 267.00
Hirata couldn't match his qualifying number in round one, but makes up for it this time. He is away first and keeps a charging Niver behind him to take the win. Niver was a little late and the race wasn't as close as the ET's would make you think.
 (W) Brandon Pierce (A/FD) 0.076 5.316 255.34
 (L) Sean O'Bannon (Jack O'Bannon Racing B/AD) 0.052 7.937 114.47
O'Bannon smokes the tires at the hit and that's the end of the blown cars for 2006. Pierce was ready for him anyway and picks up even more on his prior ET's. He'll have a .003 advantage on Reichert to take lane choice in round three.
 (W) Spencer Massey (Snowman Racing A/FD) 0.001 5.305 269.83
 (L) Garrett Bateman (Big O Tires A/FD) 0.066 5.387 262.18
Massey makes a statement and pulls out the stops to take all of the the best numbers for the round. Super .001 RT and the quickest pass of the session ensures the win over Bateman. Bateman makes his best run of the weekend too, but it's all Massey from wire to wire. He will Have lane choice over Hirata next round.

 (L) Brandon Pierce (A/FD) 0.066 15.465 52.61
2:48 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 73 degrees, relative humidity 34 percent, barometer 29.16 inches, adjusted altitude 2,024 feet, track temperature 94 degrees.

Two mid-west hitters come to the line. It's over at the hit, as Pierce is up in smoke at the hit. The Rislone Team gives Reichert the right tune up and he thunders on down for a decisive win.

 (W) Spencer Massey (Snowman Racing A/FD) 0.050 5.325 268.60
 (L) Dave Hirata (Skull Shine A/FD) -9.999(R) NT-Broke Before Staging
Hirata's car doesn't want to go into reverse at the end of the burnout. The team rocks the car, tries to slow down the idle, and kicks the tires to no avail. Finally, he gives it up and drives on down the lane. Massey waits patiently for him to clear the top end and then pounds out a stellar pass to capture lane choice in the finals. Two non-races set the field for the final round.
